About the DNR Fish and Wildlife Division:

The Division of Fish & Wildlife enriches the quality of life for present and future generations by balancing the biological, ecological, recreational, and economic benefits of Indiana’s fish, wildlife, and their habitats.

 

Role Overview

The Northwest Public Lands Supervisor position reports to the Public Lands Assistant Director and is a part of the Division's management team. This position oversees the seven properties in the northwest corner of the state and works closely with the other 3 public lands supervisors, the public lands staff specialist, and the land acquisition specialist to ensure that operations across the northwest function effectively. This position is responsible for ensuring their properties have the resources necessary to fulfill the management obligations of each property and that we are meeting the needs of our customers. This position directly supervises the 7 property managers which means they are responsible for establishing annual goal plans for employees, hiring, coaching, and managing staff within this region. This position is responsible for helping develop and manage budgets for their properties and ensuring that resources are being secured and effectively utilized across the system. Each of the public lands supervisors are responsible for ensuring that the properties within their region are maintaining quality habitat that is accessible to a diverse suite of customers.  

 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $85,020.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Review and evaluate regional effectiveness, goal determination, and strategic planning, etc., makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Develop and coordinate plans and policies, resources, and mission as well as goals, vision, and expectations of an assigned region.
  • Provide guidance to agencies and the public regarding applicable laws and rules.
  • Supervise subordinate personnel including hiring, determining workload, and delegating assignments, training, monitoring, and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary action.
  • Monitor regional budget including revenues, expenditures, and budget projections.
  • Communicate with news and other media. responds to media questions or requests in an appropriate public relations manner.
  • Coordinate with other government officials on planning issues (i.e. federal and/or state agency directors, etc.).  
  • Coordinate, review and evaluate the use of appropriate controls and standards for the region.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels.
  • Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions while anticipating the impact and implications of decisions.
  • Ability to identify problems. determine accuracy and relevance of information. use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
