The Steam Plant Supervisor is responsible for full operation and maintenance of a coal-fired powerhouse in a state institution. This role reports directly to the Physical Plant Director I and directly supervises all Steam Plant Operators, Fire Tenders, Maintenance Mechanics and other personnel assigned to powerhouse.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Supervises annual overhaul and cleaning of boilers, repairing of pumps and mechanical equipment, and servicing of diesel and electrical motors and engines;
  • Ensures that Steam Plant Operators on all shifts maintain safe and efficient operation of powerhouse;
  • Assigns each shift an area of responsibility for cleaning and making minor repairs;
  • Reviews blueprints and coordinates outside contractual maintenance and construction work;
  • Prepares justifications for and requisitions tools, equipment and supplies for powerhouse;
  • Makes recommendations to Physical Plant Director concerning personnel required for each shift;
  • Ensures that established safety and operating standards are adhered to by all subordinates;
  • Trains new employees regarding duties in powerhouse and provides on-the-job training to maximize staff development;
  • Counsels, disciplines, evaluates and reviews work of subordinates as needed;
  • Interviews prospective employees and makes recommendations to Physical Plant Director regarding hiring, promotions, and dismissals;
  • Instructs personnel as to new policies, program changes and procedures;
  • Plans, instructs, and coordinates operation and work distribution in emergency situations;

Preferred Experience:

Four (4) years experience in a large institutional or industrial steam plant -AND- Four (4) years of supervisory experience in the above areas -AND- Two (2) years experience must have been within a coal-fired plant -AND- must obtain within Twelve (12) months the "Power Engineer Certification" as issued by the Indiana Association of the National Association of Power Engineers; or Possession of the Power Engineer Certification at the time of application or experience as a state steam plant shift operator (71102)

  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to manage phases of powerhouse operation including methods used in operation of coal-fired boilers;
  • Thorough knowledge of operating standards to assure a safe, efficient powerhouse;
  • Specialized knowledge of maintenance, repair and cleaning needs of all mechanical and electrical equipment located in powerhouse;
  • Practical knowledge of agency and state personnel policies and procedures;
  • Ability to train, supervise and instruct all employees and inmates on all phases of powerhouse functions and operation of equipment;
  • Ability to work highly independently in planning and directing all phases of operation;
  • Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate procedures in emergency situations;
  • Ability to read blueprints and work with outside contractors on repairs or construction;
  • Ability to analyze and determine staff needs and work distribution;
  • Ability to obtain “Certificate of Competency” from Indiana Association of Power Engineers.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
This role provides supervision for offenders and requires a high level of judgment and care.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
