Salary: 

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $70,122.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

Location: 

This position is in INDOT's West Lafayette Research & Development. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Provide expertise regarding the architecture, planning, design and implementation of complex network systems. 
  • Develop, plan, and implement the overall strategic goals of an organizational network design. 
  • Coordinate and facilitate timely repairs ensuring the availability of technology related systems. 
  • Consult on complex projects and is considered to be the top-level contributor/specialist. 
  • Provide the highest level of escalation and resolution of issues for the campus area network, wide area network, and other local area networks. 
  • Manage the assessment and optimization of network design through review and assessment. 
  • Oversee and manage the maintenance of the multi-layer switches and routers, client and network VPN appliances, intrusion prevention systems, firewalls, protocol analyzers, video over IP, network management products, wireless networks and Voice over IP (VoIP) systems or any other new technology.  
  • Oversee and perform identification of system/network problems. 
  • Oversee and perform the testing, adjusting and troubleshooting of equipment. 
  • Develop and conduct feasibility studies for large projects. 
  • Perform capacity planning to ensure network demands. 
  • Interface with vendor support to resolve hardware/software compatibility issues. 
  • Evaluate vendor products and makes recommendations on selection. 
  • Provide tactical and strategic input on overall network planning and related projects. 
  • Manage the support, monitoring and troubleshooting of hardware/software problems and recommends scheduling of repairs. 
  • Evaluating new technology and products to determine the feasibility of implementation. 
  • Provide guidance to user agencies for maximum utilization of the communications infrastructure. 
  • Participate in formulating the office services budget and oversees the expenditure of funds. 
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development. 
  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.  Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Information Technology or related field with a minimum of 6 years of networking experience. Commensurate experience may be substituted for college degree. 
  • Thorough knowledge of networking hardware/software. 
  • Thorough knowledge of advanced multi-protocol network environments. 
  • Thorough knowledge of advanced switching techniques. 
  • Thorough knowledge of advanced load balancing methodologies. 
  • Thorough knowledge of advanced encryption strategies.  
  • Thorough knowledge of different topology systems.  
  • Thorough knowledge of network design and traffic engineering. 
  • Thorough knowledge of network designing, implementing and managing security practices. 
  • Thorough knowledge of network capacity planning and event management tools.  
  • Thorough knowledge of all guidelines, policies and procedures related to multi-protocol services. 
  • Advanced knowledge of wireless protocols and technologies. 
  • Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow 
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets. 
  • Effective communication skills.  
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret complex manuals and drawings.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
