About the Indiana Veterans’ Home:
Located in West Lafayette, Indiana, the Indiana Veterans' Home (IVH) offers long-term skilled nursing care, short-term rehabilitation, independent living, and memory care services to honorably discharged Indiana veterans and their spouses. New in 2018, IVH is now accepting Gold Star parents!

Salary Information:
The starting salary for this position starts at $29,640.00.

About the Job:

As the cook at the Indiana Veterans' Home, you will provided cooked, nutritious meals for residents, family, and staff.  You will have minimal supervision and reports directly to the Food Service Supervisor.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions for this position are:

  • Prepares variety of foods such as meats, vegetables, breads,desserts and salads in a nutritious and appealing manner.
  • Able to follow production amounts.
  • Calculates quantities of ingredients to yield desired quantity and quality of food.
  • Prepares special diet foods following dietitians menu order.
  • Stores, retrieves foods from freezer and refrigerators and maintains inventory of foods.
  • Performs a variety of clean-up and sanitation duties such as washing walls, mop floors, wash pots and pans, ovens, slicer, chopper, steamers, knives and grills.
  • Practice FIFO method, properly dates and stores food.
  • Clean work area and fill out cleaning lists daily.
  • Record temeratures of foods and quantities that are produced and left over.
  • Uses santitary practices when preparing foods.
  • Mentor and train new state and contract staff.
  • All other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Working knowledge of and ability to practice and apply principles of large scale food preparation.
  • Working knowledge and use of large scale food production equipment.
  • Working knowledge of weights and measures and how quantities affect cooking times and quality of products prepared.
  • Ability to read and accurately follow recipes and special diets.
  • Ability to complete simple math calculations.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
