Indiana Veteran's Home

The Indiana Veterans’ Home, located in West Lafayette, Indiana, is the only long term care facility in Indiana dedicated to serving veterans and their spouses.  We provide a beautiful, healthy and home-like environment for veterans and their spouses to live. About the Job

The Indiana Veterans' Home is currently seeking a Charge Nurse to work as Registered Nurse in the Nursing Department of the Indiana Veterans' Home and perform all aspects of nursing care, within the scope of the Indiana Nurse Practice Act, utilizing specialized knowledge, judgment and skill.  Management responsibilities and accountability are specific to one nursing unit. This work requires the performance of a full range of nursing care for patients with a wide range of medical diagnoses and varying degrees of illness.  Reports to Charge Nurse Supervisor 5.

A Day in the Life
  • Screens sick-call patients referring those with major problems to the physician;
  • Prepares and gives medication, controls dosage and administers as prescribed by physicians;
  • Provides first aid to patients in case of injury, accidents, fights and suicide attempts and notifies the physician when necessary;
  • Performs complete and routine hospital nursing bed care service and assists the physician in all phases of patient care;
  • Gives new residents inoculations and immunization shots and draws blood for testing purposes;
  • Evaluates patient responses to actual or potential health conditions;
  • Controls violent or disturbed patients;
  • Contacts patients’ families regarding unusual medical conditions of patients;
  • Directs attendants and coordinates their activities;
  • Develops nursing care plans for individual patients in conjunction with health service personnel including Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Psychologists and Psychiatrists, etc.;
  • Designates work assignments to staff of a nursing care unit;
  • Assists in personnel evaluations;
  • Inventories pharmaceutical supplies and requisitions for drugs, supplies and equipment needed on wards;
  • Performs related work as required.
What We're Looking For
  • Six (6) months of professional experience working in an institutional setting,
  • Or working with geriatric patients, psychiatric patients,
  • Or patients with developmental disabilities
  • Or a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited college, valid Registered Nurse License issued by the Indiana Health Professions Bureau required.
What You'll Need For Success
  • License to practice in the State of Indiana as a registered nurse;
  • Specialized knowledge of and the ability to utilize a full range of accepted professional nursing principles and practices;
  • Specialized knowledge of psychiatric nursing, psychology of human behavior and sociology as they relate to individuals, their behavior and condition, families of patients and environmental conditions influencing patient treatment;
  • Working knowledge of Indiana State Department of Health’s laws and regulations pertaining to hospitalized patients;
  • Ability to communicate with patients regarding medical and nursing procedures and patient’s conditions;
  • Ability to coordinate and develop innovative activities and approaches to patient treatment;
  • High degree of skill in providing care and in reacting effectively to emergency situations;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
