About Governor's Summer Internship Program: 

The Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) is designed to give college students real world, hands on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

 

Hiring Salary:

The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) summer internship program is a paid summer internship that lasts approximately 3.5 months. Listed salary is approximate. The hourly wage is $11.30.

About the Job:

This position will serve as an Environmental Intern for the Vincennes District Capital Program Management Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The intern is responsible for helping to prepare and review environmental documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), INDOT and other applicable regulatory agencies. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the Senior Environmental Manager Supervisor.

A Day in the Life:
  • Collects, researches, and digitizes environmental data;
  • Collects and analyzes field data; 
  • Main project will include completion of all environmental research and on-site investigations (with staff assistance) for the 2021/2022 capital program as assigned; 
  • Prepares environmental documents for various other INDOT projects, including the development and coordination of environmental related reports; 
  • Ensures compliance with federal & state regulations; 
  • Provides related technical assistance in development & maintenance of tracking logs using data base management system; and
  • Performs other job related duties as required.
     
What You’ll Need For Success:

Currently enrolled or recent graduate of an Environmental or closely related (e.g. geology, archaeology, natural resources, ecology, etc.) program.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
Difficulty of Work:

Requires applicant to have the ability to define problems, collect data and draw valid conclusions.  Collate and classify information and data. Possesses good customer service and communication skills. Work performed can vary from routine to high degree of difficulty. The work requires specialized knowledge of environmental science and environmental concerns. Employee exercises judgment and decision making. Work is carried out under the specifications and guidelines based on established policies and procedures.

Responsibility:

Employee is responsible for completion of work and accuracy of records, forms, reports, and technical information disseminated. Questions that may arise are discussed with supervisor; otherwise work is reviewed in terms of overall efficiency and smoothness of operations.
