This position is for a District Traffic Engineer and is located in the Vincennes District, 


About the Job:

As  District Traffic Engineer, you are responsible for engineering policies, plans, and projects concerned with traffic studies, speed control, interchange justification, high accident locations, traffic flow, signals, and warrants. In addition, you will provide leadership, guidance, and technical support to other departments in the District including oversight of the Traffic Investigation Engineer, Traffic Planning Engineer and Traffic Field Investigators. This position reports directly to the Technical Services Director.

A Day in the Life:

  • Develop engineering policies, plans, and projects concerned with traffic studies, speed control, interchange justification, high accident locations, traffic flow, signals, and warrants.
  • Provide technical expertise in the area of traffic study, highway capacity, signal warrants, traffic control zones.
  • Provide work assignments for the Traffic Investigation Engineer, Traffic Planning Engineer and Traffic Field Investigators
  • Establish priorities for high accident location activities
  • Conducts field inspections
  • Act as an advisor to District Deputy Director on traffic related issues.
  • Serves on Safety Asset and Mobility Asset Committees (either as chair or alternate)
  • Provide technical expertise in reviewing of contract plans for traffic related issues.
  • Provide reports for accident reduction, counter-measures, access modifications, ahd highway capacity
  • Act as an expert witness in court cases involving traffic related issues.
  • Independently generates and signs name to external correspondence (e.g. inquiries, investigations, and acknowledgments) to consultants, governmental units, private industries,and general public matters relating to sections’ activities
  • Meets with officials from district and/or external officials (e.g. consultants, Federal Highway Administration, local authorities, and county officials) to present department position and offer recommendations of acceptable alternatives where established policy does not apply
  • Analyzes and determines the feasibility of projects from the Safety and Mobility asset teams for Call for Projects. Plans projects to enhance the transportation system.
  • Operate state vehicle to travel to sites to inspect complex structures (e.g. accident locations; speed, school and no parking zone locations; new access points; sight distance; spot speeds (lasers), traffic control items, and complaint locations generated by the general public).
  • Aids District Highway Maintenance department on traffic-related issues.
  • Performs special assignments assigned by the Technical Services Director.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Civil Engineering with B.S. Degree and a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Indiana.
  • Preferred minimum of three (3) years experience in Highway Traffic.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of highway statutes, departmental, and administrative rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of INDOT specifications and the ability to read and understand plans.
  • Knowledge of state and federal Traffic regulations, laws, and standards.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft programs
  • Preferred knowledge of traffic analysis software programs (e.g. Synchro, HCS, Sidra, RoadHAT, CAP X etc…)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
