About the Indiana Department of Homeland Security:

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) leads Indiana's emergency planning and operations, first responder training and fire and building safety. The Indiana State Fire Marshal leads the Division of Fire and Building Safety (within IDHS), which oversees the enforcement of building codes and includes a fire investigations unit. The agency certifies and trains thousands of first responders and also hosts state-level exercises each year. IDHS also supports the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which leads response and coordination efforts for large-magnitude incidents.



This position traditionally starts at $34,398 per year and may be commensurate with education and work experience.

About the Job:

You will work with fire detection and reporting systems using appropriate tools and meters to repair federally supported Air National Guard facilities.  You will perform technical electronic work including installation, operation and maintenance of electronic equipment and devices including fire alarms, fire detection, radio communications,  CCTV, etc. at Hulman Field.

A Day in the Life:

The essential elements of the job duties:

  • Diagnoses, repairs and makes necessary adjustments to maintain electronic equipment;
  • Performs checks of all electronic devices and recommends courses of action for repairs of the malfunctions;
  • Performs locate services for buried electronic infrastructure using construction as-builts, site drawings and simple locating equipment.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs fire detection and reporting systems: analog or digital;
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs of two-way transceiver handheld, mobiles, base stations, repeaters, programming and base antennas;
  • Installs, maintains and repairs all fire system cabling;
  • Installs, maintains, repairs and tests computer cable;
  • Performs grounds maintenance of the air base to include mowing and snow removal;
  • Assists in building maintenance throughout the base to include minor and emergency repairs of plumbing, electrical, etc;

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Must have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE).
  • Four (4) years of experience in repair and/or maintenance of electronic components and equipment. 
  • Thorough knowledge of, and ability to inspect, analyze and install electronic equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of standard theories, methods, procedures, materials, test equipment and tools of the electronics field.
  • Working knowledge of, and ability to utilize, repair manuals, schematics, and parts catalogs.
  • Working knowledge of hazards peculiar to high voltage electronics equipment and applicable safety procedures.
  • Working knowledge of various power regulations throughout the state.
  • Ability to analyze, diagnose and correct malfunctions of a wide variety of electronic equipment.
  • Ability to establish professional and technical contacts with manufacturers, suppliers, and vendors of electronic equipment.
  • Ability to maintain and update files on equipment and counts.

Additional requirements if position is for AGO:

  • Provide direct support to military unit on live fire training ranges and complexes.
  • Perform duties during day, night, and all-weather conditions.
  • Required to attend and receive certification for overseeing an Indiana Department of Correction work crew. 
  • Working knowledge of fire code, IOSHA requirements, facility departmental and state policies and procedures, federal, state and local building codes.
