About the Indiana Horse Racing Commission (HRC):
We know real Hoosier horsepower! It is the mission of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission to oversee pari-mutuel horse racing in Indiana, and to protect the integrity of the sport through active and diligent regulation.


Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $24.27 per hour but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Provide oversight of Blood Gas program operations. 
  • Supervise the handling of all laboratory specimens to prevent tampering, confusion, or contamination. 
  • Keep proper records of blood gas activity and sample specimens to ensure the integrity of the chain of custody. 
  • Prepare and deliver samples for shipment to the testing laboratory. 
  • Draw blood on horses as directed by Commission Blood Gas Policy. 
  • Serve as backup for the Veterinary Technician(s) in the Test Barn.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:

  • A Registered Veterinary Technician (such as a graduate of Purdue University Veterinary Technology Program or its equivalent) is preferred. 
  • Recordkeeping, administrative and supervisory skills. 
  • Practical experience with large animals, preferably horses. 
  • Thorough knowledge of Indiana Horse Racing Commission rules and regulations.  
  • Broad knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and terminology. 
  • Broad knowledge of chemistry, laboratory procedures, and terminology. 
  • Knowledge of security procedures as applied to laboratory organization and policies. 
  • Ability to obtain biological samples from animal subjects. 
  • Ability to apply analytical skills to select appropriate guidelines and formulate and follow through with a variety of investigative and/or research projects. 
  • Fingerprinting and the ability to pass a limited criminal history check are required for this position.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
