About the Job:

The purpose of this position is to assist in providing a safe and efficient transportation system for the motoring public. This is accomplished through investigating to determine the correct traffic control devices at various locations in response to public requests, reviewing construction plans & special provisions for traffic control items, and gathering information and documents in response to requests for public information and questionnaires/interrogatories for tort claims.

A Day in the Life:

The essential elements of the job duties: 

  • Conduct field inspections of roadways and intersections to determine traffic control needs;
  • Review data provided by investigators for traffic investigations and make recommendations for changes to traffic control devices if needed;
  • Prepare work orders and official actions to support recommendations;
  • Review construction plans at each stage of plan development for traffic control items (MOT, signs, pavement markings, signals, and lighting);
  • Gather information and documents and prepare responses to requests for public information. Prepare answers to questionnaires/interrogatories for tort claims;
  • Utilizes traffic analysis software programs (e.g. HCS, SYNCHRO, PETRA, Electronic Count Board, PC Warrant, etc...);
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Civil Engineer with Bachelor of Science Degree in related field;
  • Licensed as registered professional engineer in Indiana;
  • Must possess valid Indiana driver’s license;
  • Knowledge of civil engineering; public relations/; OSHA safety practices;
  • Considerable knowledge in use of;
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret variety of civil engineering principles, techniques, procedures, criteria, plans and specifications and related data; define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid engineering/technical conclusions; use statistical analysis; calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; cooperate with co-workers on group projects and/or establish friendly atmosphere as supervisor; handle routine and sensitive contacts with government officials, consulting firms/contractors and general public

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
