Summary/Objective:

 

The purpose of this position is to perform technical engineering assignments in collecting and analyzing data as well as preparing reports for various traffic and safety studies. Takes customer requests and conducts traffic investigations looking holistically at the locations and provides recommendations based on engineering principles. Makes observations of existing field conditions throughout the District and provides recommendations of improvements on a regular basis. Investigations are completed using special tools and measuring devices. Makes factual determination of causes and contributing conditions for fatal crashes along with preventative recommendations.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Collect field data and make observations for assigned projects including (not limited to) traffic volume counts, roadway measurements, sight distance, and taking photographs/video of locations being investigated
  • Conduct various traffic studies (Traffic Signal, Flashing Beacon, Speed, Parking, School Zones, Sign Request, Guardrail, Fatal Crash, No Passing Zone, etc)
  • Utilize traffic analysis software (Signal Warrant, Left-Turn, RoadHAT, etc)
  • Use Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, databases, satellite imagery, and graphics software to prepare reports
  • Conduct investigations using special devices (Distance Measuring Instrument, Miovision Cameras, Electronic Ball-Bank Indicator, PETRA Count Board, Speed Radar Gun, etc)
  • Use ARIES to pull crash reports, organize in spreadsheets, and prepare final reports
  • Update the crash database quarterly
  • Discover fatal crashes, investigate, and prepare final reports bi-weekly
  • Oversee maintenance of all relevant equipment
  • Follows guidelines established in the Indiana Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (IMUTCD), Investigations Manual, and Indiana Design Manual
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Preferred Associates degree or five (5) years of related experience
  • Must possess valid driver’s license
  • Must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days
  • Ability to use appropriate software to create diagrams, spreadsheets, and reports
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Considerable knowledge of federal, state and county traffic laws, ordinances and regulations as they pertain to vehicular and pedestrian traffic volumes and movement
  • Must be able to work independently or cooperativelyMust be available for snow and ice removal and report in a timely manner
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
