About the Job:

This position develops and produces plans, proposals, specifications, and engineering estimates for various in-house road and/or bridge projects. 

Remote Work Policy: In circumstances where work can be effectively accomplished in locations other than state facilities, this policy authorizes agencies to evaluate and permit, without additional authorization, the regular use of up to 15 hours of Remote Work per work week.

A Day in the Life:

  • Develops and produces detailed bridge and/or, road, traffic, drainage and maintenance design plans for a variety of transportation projects prepared within the office and to be carried out by others. Independently conducts studies to assess feasibility and soundness of proposed project designs and recommends and implements changes based on findings.
  • Provides direction and explanation of various plans for use by Contractors;
  • Prepares support documentation for contract plans to include; crash analysis, safety analysis, hydraulic analysis, estimates, environmental permits and unique special provisions.
  • Generates detailed drawings using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) and other engineering design software. These drawings may involve: drainage, traffic maintenance, traffic control, general roadway, structures, right-of-way, signals and earthwork.
  • Updates regularly an electronic data system recording design/project progress.
  • Calculates and summarizes plan quantities.
  • Consults with central office involving design plans or projects;
  • Signs plans as registered Professional Engineer;
  • Operates state vehicle to travel to projects to conduct field work or reviews, when necessary;
  • Keeps abreast of current design and construction standards, CADD and engineering design software; and attends appropriate training seminars;
  • Assists with special projects and other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited school.

What You’ll Need For Success:

  • Civil Engineer with Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited school;
  • Licensed as a registered professional engineer in Indiana, or ability to obtain license within 4 years. Applicants with an EIT will be hired as an HE4 with an immediate opportunity for promotion to an HE3 upon receiving an Indiana Professional Engineering License.
  • Must possess valid Indiana driver’s license;
  • Considerable knowledge in use of a computer, CADD & Microsoft Office
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to comprehend & interpret variety of civil engineering principles, techniques, procedures, criteria, plans & specifications & related data; define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid engineering/technical conclusions; use statistical analysis; .
  • Ability to cooperate with coworkers on group projects and establish a friendly atmosphere with coworkers;
  • Ability to handle routine and sensitive contacts with governmental officials, consulting firms, contractors, and general public;
  • Ability to plan and develop engineering projects with controversial problems and/or novel engineering related concepts and approaches.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
