Role Overview

To assist the Project Engineer or Project Supervisor with Construction Inspection and oversight on a highway contract.  To perform other duties as the Project Engineer or Project Supervisor deems necessary to deliver INDOT projects. 

 

Hourly Rate:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Acts as on-site inspector exercising due diligence in overseeing the operations of contractors, in order to ensure compliance with specifications. Performs entry-level inspection duties such as collecting delivery tickets, checking temperatures, checking paver speed, and more technical tasks associated with project inspection.   
  • Checks for acceptable conformance of lines, grades, dimensions, and material requirements. Performs surveying, staking, plotting and computation of cross-sections.  Operates a variety of testing equipment, such as concrete air and slump test equipment, sand cone compaction testers, dynamic cone penetrometers, and lightweight deflectometers.  Makes concrete sample cylinders and beams for quality assurance (strength testing).  Samples aggregate as well as in-place hot mix asphalt and submits samples to the Testing Department and/or the Office of Material Management.  Communicates deficiencies to contractor and monitors corrective action 
  • Completes a variety of daily and other periodic reports such as daily construction diaries, material records, and testing records.  Provides input to Project Engineer or Project Supervisor in order to assist them in dispute resolution and in consideration of change order and extra work requests.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Possess a valid driver’s license. 
  • Possess good customer service and communication skills. 
  • Preferred enrollment in ABET accredited University Civil Engineering or related program. 
  • Basic knowledge of Civil Engineering Technology 
  • Ability to understand civil engineering technology; use statistical analysis; comprehend & interpret plans & specifications to design standard plans; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; handle routine & sensitive contacts with public, government officials & property owners concerning assigned projects. 

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
