Role Overview:
The Bridge Inspection Technician works with the Seymour District Bridge Inspection Team in conducting inspections of bridges and large culverts in accordance with FHWA National Bridge Inspection Standards and the INDOT Bridge Inspection Manual. This position directly impacts the maintenance of Indiana's infrastructure and the public's safety. All training, equipment, and tools will be provided to be successful in this position.
Location:
This position is located in INDOT’s Seymour District, Bridge Inspection Department.
CDL Positions:
Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.
Salary:
This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $22.00 an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this roles are as follows:
- Employee follows established procedures and practices.
- Employee is responsible for completion of job assignments and accuracy of records, forms, reports, and technical information disseminated.
- Employee must communicate tactfully and effectively with contractors and representatives of material suppliers.
These additional duties may be performed depending on the job assignment:
Asset Inspector:
- Perform a visual and physical inspection of INDOT owned and maintained assets to evaluate maintenance needs and assign condition rating.
- Operate inspection equipment to determine location, condition rating, and operation of small culvert assets.
Bridge Maintenance & Repair Specialist
- Operate basic highway maintenance equipment, specialized bridge repair and inspection equipment for maintenance, repair, and inspection of bridge structures.
- Investigate complaints related to bridges and large culverts and coordinate to ensure follow up action is taken.
Contracts Inspector:
- Perform inspections activities and complete the related paperwork on all maintenance contracts.

What You'll Need for Success:
This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Must possess a valid driver license.
- Must have valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 90 days.
- Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing and walking for long periods of time.
- Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather.
- Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly.
- Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
- The ability to read, interpret and follow technical documents such as AASHTO, ASTM, INDOT specifications, and Indiana Test Methods (ITM);
- Basic knowledge of and the ability to operate and maintain material testing equipment.
