Role Overview: 

INDOT's Seymour District Finance Department is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Account Payable Accountant to manage essential financial transactions. The ideal candidate should be a proactive problem-solver with excellent communication and organizational skills, have a strong undertanding of accounts payable principles and procedures, excellent data entry skills with a high level of accuracy, and possess the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment.

 

Salary

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $37,648.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience. 

 

Location

This position is located in INDOT’s Seymour District, Finance Department.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Post transactions to appropriate ledgers and accounts
  • Verify accuracy of all financial documents and records
  • Reconcile accounts and subsidiary ledgers with the general ledger
  • Prepare, correct, and adjust entries prior to closing accounts
  • Prepare periodic financial reports such as balance sheets and income statements
  • Ensure availability of funds before authorizing payment or submitting vouchers for payment to the State Auditor’s Office for approval
  • Prepare, edit, and verify electronic data processing entries and documents
  • Accurately receive and match invoices against purchase orders to ensure proper payment authorization. Investigate and resolve any discrepancies between invoices and purchase orders
  • Validate all employee expense reports for adherence to company policy and proper documentation
  • Process and submit reimbursements in a timely manner
  • Prepare and make bank deposits accurately and efficiently. Maintain organized records of all deposits
  • Regularly reconcile vendor statements to identify and resolve any discrepancies, ensuring accurate account balances, and timely payments
  • Collect and verify necessary vendor forms to establish new vendor accounts
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and tax regulations
  • Create and process requisitions ensuring proper accounting chart fields
  • Maintain accurate and organized accounts payables records and documentation
  • Respond to vendor and employee inquiries regarding payment status and other accounts payable matters in a professional and timely manner

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Foundational knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of public accounting.
  • Foundational knowledge of agency function and organization.
  • Foundational knowledge of the federal and state laws, procedures, practices and policies of governmental accounting and bookkeeping.
  • Foundational knowledge of automated accounting systems.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to solve standard accounting problems.
  • Ability to evaluate and recommend modifications to existing accounting methods and procedures.
  • Ability to accurately perform arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate and concise reports.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
