About the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites
The mission of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites is to celebrate, explore and steward all that is authentically wondrous about Indiana.  The ISMHS is a forward-thinking, unparalleled resource for learning about and appreciating Indiana and its role in the world. This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $29,601.  

About The Job:

The Program Developer/Naturalist is responsible to the Site Manager, and Regional Manager for the interpretation and proper maintenance of the cultural, botanical, and zoological aspects of the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site. The position  develops and implements mission driven programs, school groups and private tours.

A Day In The Life:

Programs and Interpretation – Develop, budget, and implement site appropriate public and school programs for students and general audiences in consultation with the Site Manager.


Equipment Care and Safety Procedure — Must use proper safety practices when using any equipment. Incumbent must be aware of and able to execute safety measures to protect the public, staff, structures and artifacts in case of an emergency. Training will be available on all procedures.


Purchasing and Procurement Paperwork — Process necessary paperwork involved in purchasing for the needs of the grounds and facilities and program needs and process necessary paperwork involved in receiving and reporting revenue. This position will be well versed in the procedure for processing paperwork.


Educational Outreach — Be required to demonstrate site programs to visitors as well as during outreach ventures. The Program Developer & Naturalist will be knowledgeable about the site’s flora, fauna and cultural, as well as site interpretation plan, furnishing plan, and have the ability to inform the public about such.

Facility Rentals- Work with guests who rent the facility and coordinating preparations between renter and site.


Invasive Species- Work with the gardener to control & manage invasive species.

What We're Looking For:
  • B.S. or B.A. Degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Wildlife Management, Forestry, Museum Studies or similar field.
  • Relevant experience will be considered.
What You Need For Success:
  • Awareness and understanding of procedures, materials and equipment that are dictated by the job duties.
  • Ability to effectively operate a cash register and basic cash handling skills.
  • Flexibility in schedule to include holidays & weekends.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people as well as the general public in a pleasing and non-confrontational manner and to provide educational programs as needed.
  • Ability to accept and follow instructions given by a supervisor in the performance of job duties.
  • Needs to be self-motivated and interested in continually improving the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site.
  • Ability to communicate with the Site Manager, Regional Manager, other ISMHS staff and the general public orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, computer and phone skills.
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s License.
