The Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant plans, conducts and assesses treatment programs to meet the identified needs of the patients/residents within a state facility. 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Directs, instructs and supervises patients/residents in specialized activities;
  • Conducts rehabilitation programs independently for assigned patients/residents in a manner consistent with the policies and procedures;
  • Advises and reinforces patients/residents on acceptable social behavior employing behavior modification or other techniques;
  • Plans, develops and schedules activities for therapeutic field trips;
  • Observes and documents patient/resident progress, attendance, behavior and outcomes for the individual patients/residents assigned to their program;
  • Assists in the training and supervising of lower-level assistants;
  • Maintains and organizes resident library materials assisting them in library use and recommending reading material based on their interests;
  • Writes daily program activities and lesson plans for group and individual therapy sessions;
  • Assists in the care and maintenance of facilities and ordering of supplies and equipment making minor repairs on special equipment;
  • Attends treatment team meetings and provides input as to individual patients’/residents’ progress and needs;
  • Assesses patient’s/resident’s daily progress and makes recommendations regarding changes in therapeutic activities;

  • Specialized knowledge of standard techniques and methods of providing rehabilitation;
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations and policies related to rehabilitation therapy;
  • Working knowledge of limitations and needs of the physically challenged;
  • Working knowledge of, and proper use of, special equipment or materials utilized in rehabilitation therapy;
  • Working knowledge of sociology and psychology as they relate to assessing rehabilitation needs of patients/residents;
  • Working knowledge of, and ability to implement, behavior modification techniques to complement rehabilitation therapy programs;
  • Ability to stimulate patient’s/resident’s interests in specialized activities;
  • Ability to assess patient’s/resident’s progress and needs, changing instructional methods as appropriate;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
Difficulty of Work:

Work requires application of standard therapy procedures, specialized knowledge of one area of rehabilitation therapy and the ability to coordinate and direct therapeutic activities for residents.


The Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant receives general instructions regarding the standard therapy programs to conduct and follows established procedures in implementing a specialized program on a daily basis.  This individual works with a high degree of independence as the only therapy staff directing residents in specific activities or as the senior level paraprofessional coordinating work of, and supervising, lower-level assistants.  Individual uses judgement in executing specific programs and adapting daily activities to meet individual needs.  Because of independence, faulty judgement or poor quality of services provided can have adverse effects on patient’s/resident’s rehabilitation.

Working Conditions:
This role performs work in a state operated hospital facility.
Operations may require this role to be available after hours (on-call) and/or work rotating shifts, evenings and weekends, or irregular hours.
There is potential for exposure to infectious diseases in this role.
