The Pharmacy Technician performs pharmacy related functions, in compliance with policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. This role works under the direction of a pharmacist. 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Prepares medications according to physician orders.
  • Ensures correct dose preparation of medications, ensuring each package contains the correct strength, lot number and expiration date; while following correct unit dose procedures.
  • Delivers medication and other pharmacy equipment to patient units, ensuring medication security during transit.
  • Returns unused medications from the patient units to the pharmacy.
  • Fills patient medication drawers.
  • Prepares medications and supplies for dispensing, including pre-packing bulk medications.
  • Prepares prescriptions for therapeutic leaves and discharges.
  • Prepares inventories, orders drugs and supplies from the storeroom, receives drugs and stocks shelves in various pharmacy locations.
  • Performs monthly nursing unit inspections, maintains workload records and collects quality assurance data.
  • Coordinates insurance billing including third party prescriptions.
  • Performs monthly inspections of medication storage areas, checking medication expiration dates restocking and rotating inventory as needed.
  • Ensures efficient inventory management, including procurement, annual inventory and the processing of invoices.

  • Must be licensed as a pharmacy technician in the State of Indiana or be enrolled in a technician training program and possess a technician-in-training permit.
  • Knowledge of the computerized pharmacy medication ordering system and the automated medication dispensing units as appropriate.
  • Ability to use various equipment including computers and pharmaceutical packaging equipment.
  • Ability to work safely and have the willingness to comply with special safety and health precautions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain records and responsibility for controlled susbstances.
  • Ability to maintain inventory control of drugs and supplies.
  • Knowledge of departmental and facility wide policies and procedures.
  • Ability to rotate through all work areas of the pharmacy.
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to screen telephone calls and connect to appropriate individuals.
  • Ability to perform computer data entry of patient demographic and billing information.

Difficulty of Work:

The work involves a variety of moderately complex tasks and procedures. Must have abilities and thorough knowledge base, understanding and level of proficiency to assure adherence to the procedures, policies and objectives of the pharmacy department.


The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for a variety of record keeping and drug dispensing functions performed in accordance with standardized procedures.  This role works independently although all drugs are under supervision of a registered pharmacist, this individual must use good judgment in rotating, ordering and maintaining stock levels appropriately.  Errors should be minimal with the pharmacist checking orders after they are filled to ensure accuracy.

Personal Work Relationships:

This individual will be expected to partner with agency personnel and related stakeholders working towards completion of assigned functions. Exceptional customer service is provided to agency partners and/or the general public.

A high level of judgement and effective communication is required during times of contact with facility residents/offenders.

Physical Effort:

Depending on the duties performed or environment setting, frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs or ladders, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and/or similar movements may be involved.

This role requires legible handwriting to help partners in understanding written communication.

This role requires keen observational and hearing skills to stay alert for possible dangerous situations.

Working Conditions:

This role performs work in a state operated hospital facility.

There is potential for exposure to infectious diseases in this role.

This role may experience periods of high stress and/or pressure.

This role requires the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when necessary.
