Night Shift Charge Nurse - Richmond State Hospital

Summary/Objective:

A Charge Nurse is assigned to the evening or night shift and functions as a patient care coordinator for several clinical units at a state hospital facility.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this roles are as follows:

  • Performs Unit Manager administrative functions;
  • Completes assessment of patients;
  • Applies nursing and/or psycho-social care of patients;
  • Provides nursing care of patients;
  • Performs medication administration and related functions to patients.

Requirements:

  • License to practice in the State of Indiana as a registered nurse;
  • Specialized knowledge of and the ability to utilize a full range of accepted professional nursing principles and practices;
  • Specialized knowledge of psychiatric nursing, psychology of human behavior and sociology as they relate to individuals, their behavior and condition, families of patients and environmental conditions influencing patient treatment;
  • Working knowledge of Indiana State Department of Health’s laws and regulations pertaining to hospitalized patients;
  • Ability to communicate with patients regarding medical and nursing procedures and patient’s conditions;
  • Ability to coordinate and develop innovative activities and approaches to patient treatment;
  • High degree of skill in providing care and in reacting effectively to emergency situations;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

No direct reports.

Difficulty of Work:

Work requires performance of a full range of nursing practices for patients with a full range of diagnosis. Requires judgment, initiative and creativity to develop activities and approaches to patient treatment plans. Work is complex and individual must not only monitor individual patient progress and develop plans for enhancing progress but individual must also plan and carry out training to assist unit staff in carrying out effective treatment and care plans.

Responsibility:

The Charge Nurse works independently on assigned units and is responsible for quality of nursing treatment plans and effectiveness of activities and interactions geared toward treatment progress. Reports to Unit Director and Charge Nurse Supervisor but may fill in temporarily for supervisor.

Personal Work Relationships:

This individual will be expected to partner with agency personnel and related stakeholders working towards completion of assigned functions. Exceptional customer service is provided to agency partners and/or the general public.

A high level of judgement and effective communication is required during times of contact with facility residents/offenders.

Partnership with relevant public agencies, federal, state & local governments and/or community leaders may be required.

Facility residents or offenders may have family, friends, community partners and/or other interested parties come to the facility requesting information or to visit with the resident according to policies and procedures.

Physical Effort:

Depending on the duties performed or environment setting, frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, pushing and/or pulling may be involved.

Above average strength is required when restraining one or more residents or offenders as per departmental policy and procedure.

Individual is required to lift patients and push wheelchairs in some cases.

To help partners in understanding written communication, legible handwriting is required.

The ability to run short distances is needed to provide immediate care, protection, or attention to residents.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a state operated hospital facility.

Work schedule may require rotating shifts or on-call due to this being a 24/7 operation/facility.

Work duties may include exposure to infectious diseases.
