Salary Information:

This position has a pay range of $44,616.00 to $78,182.00 annually.

About the Job:

As a Law Enforcement Training Specialist, you will provide training to new and experienced law enforcement officers. The purpose of this training is to prepare the officers for law enforcement duties and to satisfy the training mandate of officers established by law. You will be working within the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA). 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:  

  • Conduct basic hands-on training as well as specialized courses for new recruits. 
  • Conducts physical training for students, beginning with an assessment of each students’ physical condition
  • Certify police officers designated by their department on specialized training like emergency vehicle operation, firearms, criminal investigations, jail officers’ course, new Chief of Police training, etc. 
  • Research, develop, and update training curricula and lesson plans. 
  • Recommend modifications to curriculum of other law enforcement training programs. 
  • Determine certification status of trainees. 
  • Counsel, tutor, and provide special guidance to trainees as needed. 
  • Serve as Academy coordinator for training conducted by other agencies utilizing academy facilities. 
  • Attend various workshops, seminars and reading professional journals to keep abreast with the latest in the field of correctional training.

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Knowledge and skill typically acquired through a Baccalaureate degree in Criminal Justice, Police Administration, or Police Science plus five years or more of police experience; related academic achievement plus specialized work experience, or highly specialized work experience alone may substitute for a Baccalaureate degree where appropriate
  • Graduate of an LETB certified academy 
  • Current LETB Instructor
  • Five (5) years full-time professional experience in corrections, education, in-service training, or related experience  
  • Veteran/Law Enforcement Candidates are encouraged to apply
  • Specialized knowledge of the various programs offered by the academy including all specialty areas (e.g., firearms, physical tactics and emergency vehicle operations). 
  • Specialized knowledge of training and educational methods, techniques, practices, principles, and group dynamics
  • Ability to conduct training analysis, needs assessments, and post-training effectiveness
  • Ability to organize and present material in lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and self-study formats
  • Ability to obtain certification as a trainer in specialized subject area(s).
