Salary Information:

This role starts at a base salary of $25,766.

About the Job:

In this role, you will serve as a Staff Duty Officer responsible for security of the Law Enforcement Training Board (LETB)/Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) and its occupants during the evening. You will work closely with Academy personnel to provide professional level administrative assistance to staff, students, law enforcement personnel, and the general public.  You will report to the Basic Course Commander.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Perform routine patrols of grounds to ensure security of buildings, grounds and residents against fire, disturbances, and vandalism.
  • Maintain a communications center for telephone, computer, and person-to-person contact between law enforcement agency heads and managers and their personnel in residence at the ILEA.
  • Monitor stand-alone fire alarm system and closed-circuit television security system.
  • Provide the Executive Director with professional level administrative assistance, managing executive office functions, procedures, and details, and representing the Executive Director in explaining and interpreting LETB policies and procedures to law enforcement agency heads, officers, and the public.
  • Provide administrative support to the Deputy Director and Training Division in supervising evening classes, monitoring recreational activities, and handling the problems of up to 300 resident students who require help with studies and problems/emergencies that arise at the Academy and at their homes.
  • Prepare administrative reports and correspondence, maintain records and files, coordinate programs, and perform a variety of office management duties associated with insuring state and local agency compliance with LETB statutory and administrative code mandates.

What We're Looking For:

  • Must possess a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE)
  • At least three (3) years of administrative experience to include clerical, education, and records maintenance
  • Possess a current/valid Indiana License to Carry a Handgun or must obtain within 3 months of employment and qualify with an issued weapon to policy standards.
  • Must be certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED or must be able to obtain certification within three months of the date of employment
  • Must have sufficient knowledge of police weaponry to distinguish between safe and unsafe conditions and practices in non-combat situations
  • Must be willing to work midnight to 8am

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Thorough knowledge of the Law Enforcement Training Board statutes and administrative codes, and the rules and procedures of the Indiana Law Enforcement Agency
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of administrative management and office procedures
  • Knowledge of state and local government administrative structure
  • Ability to coordinate complex activities, including the ability to analyze and solve problems while motivating and managing law enforcement and support personnel.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to supervise young recruits just beginning their career in law enforcement and often possessing strong, inflated egos
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently, both orally and in writing, with people from communities throughout the state, occasionally under extremely stressful circumstances
  • Knowledge of security and fire inspection and evacuation procedures.
  • Ability to make critical decisions under adverse or emergency conditions.
  • Ability to physically defend oneself.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
