About Plainfield Correctional Facility:
The Plainfield Correctional Facility is a medium security facility that was established in 1964 as the Indiana Youth Center (IYC). The facility houses over 1300 adult males assigned here from any of the 92 counties in the State of Indiana.  Plainfield Correctional offers a sex offender program along with other treatment, including vocational, academic, and volunteer strategies designed, in accordance with its mission, to facilitate a more successful habilitation program and, even more importantly, a successful community re-entry. It employs over 350 staff from diverse backgrounds coming from several countries. 
 

 

Salary: 

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,510 per year.

About the Job:

As a Correctional Sergeant you will be a frontline supervisor in an Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) facility supervising Correctional Officers regarding the security and safety of the staff and offenders.. Additional duties will include following  performance management, employee development and coaching, ensure compliance with policies and procedures, supervising, and controlling offenders and monitoring their daily activities.  You will work on an assigned shift under the general supervision of a Correctional Lieutenant.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

 

  • Lead assigned staff in maintaining the security and safety of offenders, buildings, and grounds. 
  • Ensure offenders are properly escorted to and from various locations across the facility for food, medicine, work assignments, and recreation. 
  • Review and provide feedback on such matters as offender’s movements, activities, and rule violations. 
  • Assist s supervisor in appropriate administration of security related operations. 
  • Manage offenders in various work details including general clean-up of institutional grounds and buildings. 
  • Assist in identifying offender treatment needs and support programs for treatment and rehabilitation which may include encouraging offenders to accept professional assistance and treatment from staff as needed. 
  • Follow all policies and procedures relateding to agencyfacility’s emergency preparedness and response.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • ​Possession of a High Sschool Diploma or  High School Equivalent (HSE).
  • At least six (6) months in ccustody experience  in a correctional setting, law enforcement, or military law enforcement.  
  • Must possess a valid driver's license. 
  • Upon hire, the ability to successfully complete all mandatory training including the DOC Supervisory Training Program, First Aid, and CPR courses. 
  • Must test negative on all drug screening. 
  • Working knowledge of the methods, procedures and practices utilized in a correctional environment.
  • Ability to work mandatory/voluntary overtime.
  • Ability to supervise and obtain results from offenders and subordinate staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including giving clear directions to offenders, completion of offender/conduct reports etc. 
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to apply as needed. 
     

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides supervision for offenders and requires a high level of judgment and care.
This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
