About Plainfield Correctional Facility:
As a part of the Indiana Department of Correction, the Plainfield Correctional Facility promotes public safety by providing meaningful, effective opportunities for successful re-entry.  We strive to model best Correctional practices, return productive citizens to our communities, and inspire a culture of accountability, integrity and professionalism. The Plainfield Correctional Facility is a medium security Correctional facility for adult males. Plainfield Correctional Facility is located in Plainfield, Indiana. The Plainfield Correctional Facility offers resources and treatment geared toward mental health and substance use, along with multiple educational opportunities. The goal is that through treatment and rehabilitation geared toward everyone, the facility will help prepare incarcerated men to re-enter their community with more skills and confidence than when they arrived. 

 

Role Overview

The Correctional Major manages all custody staff and is critical to the operation at Plainfield Correctional Facility


Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $67.314.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Direct custody staff in maintaining the security and safety of offenders, buildings, and grounds. 
  • Monitor operations of each shift and provides general/technical supervision for all areas of the facility. 
  • Responsible for facility inspections, emergency plans and annual internal audits. 
  • Monitor all overtime to ensure proper coverage and overtime procedure compliance. 
  • Approve/deny all leave requests for Captains and Lieutenants including vacation roster. 
  • Monitor performance and coaching entries for consistent entries by all custody supervisors. 
  • Assist in preparing/revising the master roster to best utilize custody staff and provide coverage of posts. 
  • Assist in developing, revising, and implementing all custody/security related policies, post orders and procedures. 
  • Consult with directors in matters pertaining to unit and facility security. 
  • Conduct pre-deprivation meetings. 
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development. 
  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.  Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE). 
  • Five (5) years of custody experience in a correctional institution, law enforcement or military law enforcement, plus two (2) years’ of which must include experience as a correctional supervisor or accredited college training in a related field. 
  • Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.   
  • Must test negative on all drug screenings. 
  • Ability to successfully completion of the Correctional Training Institute program or a similar training program acceptable to the Department of Correction. 
  • Broad knowledge of correctional programs and security procedures in a correctional facility. 
  • A thorough knowledge of department policies and procedures and all applicable State and Federal law and American Correctional Association (ACA) standards relative to corrections. 
  • Ability to develop and implement new correctional policies and procedures and to discern future implications as well as analyze, interpret, and correlate technical correctional material. 
  • Ability to conduct interviews and abide by all applicable laws, policies and procedures related to the recruitment, selection, promotion, and retention of staff. 
  • Ability to abide by and enforce the laws and policies related to Affirmative Action, Americans with Disability Act, Workplace Harassment, Diversity and Inclusion, and Equal Employment Opportunity. 
  • Excellent managerial, mentoring, and coaching skills 
  • Ability to act as the subject matter expert in all custody matters. 
  • Function as  the lead in emergency conditions. 
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and problem solve with supervisors, subordinates, and other staff within the unit, institution, and agency, as well as individuals in other agencies or in the general public. 
  • Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow. 
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

You must satisfy the following requirements to Continue employment:  

  • ​Ability to successfully complete all mandatory State and DOC training including DOC Supervisory Training Program, First Aid, and CPR courses.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
This role provides supervision for incarcerated individuals and requires a high level of judgment and care.
