About the Reception Diagnostic Center:
The Reception Diagnostic Center (RDC) is a maximum security intake facility for adult males sentenced to the Indiana Department of Correction. All adult males are received at RDC, classified and transferred to long-term facilities. This is with the exception of; those offenders sentenced to death bypass RDC and go directly to death row at Indiana State Prison and Juvenile offenders sentenced as adults are incarcerated at the Pendleton Juvenile facility until reaching the age of eighteen.

 

Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $45,292.00 per year but may be commensurate with education and/or experience.

About the Job:

As the Correctional Lieutenant, you will be responsible for working in an Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) facility for adult or youth offenders. In this position, you will be responsible for following all policies and procedures, performance management as well as employee development and coaching. In most cases, you will work under the general supervision of a Correctional Captain and will be directing the work of the Correctional Sergeants and Correctional Officers. Additionally, you will maintain the security of the facility as well as the safety of staff and offenders while ensuring daily activities and programs proceed on schedule.  

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Lead assigned staff in maintaining the security and safety of offenders, buildings, and grounds. 
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to facility’s operations and emergency preparedness. 
  • Provide input to supervisors on staff assignments, performance, corrective actions, and specific security issues with potential resolutions. 
  • Assist in identifying offender treatment needs and support programs for treatment and rehabilitation which may include encouraging offenders to accept professional assistance and treatment from staff as needed. 
  • Direct staff regarding the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility. 
  • Act as shift supervisor in the absence of the Captain or serve as the custody supervisor at smaller facilities. 
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development. 
  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.  Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

Compensation Data

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $45,292.00 per year but may be commensurate with education and/or experience. 

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent.   
  • Three (3) years of custody experience in a correctional institution, law enforcement or military law enforcement, and one (1) year experience as a correctional supervisor or supervisory training in a related field. 
  • Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation. 
  • Must test negative on all drug screenings.  
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and practices utilized in a correctional environment. 
  • Ability to work mandatory/voluntary overtime. 
  • Ability to supervise and achieve desired results from offenders and staff. 
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to apply as needed. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including giving clear directions. 
  • Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow. 
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets. 

 

You must satisfy the following requirements to continue employment: 

  • Ability to successfully complete all mandatory training including the DOC Supervisory Training Program, First Aid, and CPR courses. 
     

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides supervision for offenders and requires a high level of judgment and care.
This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
