The Building Custodian performs general custodial duties for a state agency or facility.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Washes windows, mirrors, sinks, faucets and soap dispensers;
  • Cleans walls, overhead vents and sanitizes toilets and urinals in restrooms;
  • Maintains supplies for restrooms and break rooms;
  • Sweeps, vacuums, wet mops, waxes and polishes floors, including lab area hallways and breezeways as required;
  • Replaces light bulbs as required;
  • Dusts cubicles, offices and AC/Heat units;
  • Raises and lowers flags daily;
  • Empties waste containers and disposes of accumulated trash;
  • Shovels snow from walks, steps and handicap ramp when necessary;
  • Performs security duties such as checking locks, turning out lights and locking doors at the end of the work day;

  • Ability to physically complete routine custodial tasks;
  • Working knowledge of the care and use of cleaning equipment, such as mops, brooms, vacuum cleaners, power scrubbers and polishers;
  • Ability to read and comprehend Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and safely use a variety of cleaning products;
  • May be required to work overtime and alternate shifts in order to participate in snow removal duties.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
