About the Miami Correctional Facility:
Miami Correctional Facility is located on the former Grissom Air Force Base, on the southeast corner of the Grissom Aeroplex, just south of Peru, Indiana, in Miami County.  This facility is classified as a medium/high maximum security correction facility, housing a maximum of 3,188 offenders.  At the DOC, we promote public safety by providing meaningful, effective opportunities for successful re-entry.  As the model of best correctional practices, we strive to return productive citizens to our communities and inspire a culture of accountability, integrity and professionalism. 


The salary for this position may be commensurate with education and/or experience.

About the Job:

As the Deputy Warden, you will be responsible for performing highly responsible administrative work assisting the appointing authority in the direction, supervision, and organization of the programmatic or operational areas in a state correctional facility. In this position, you will formulate both security and operating functions, interpret, and carry out the policies of the Department of Correction. You will supervise a large staff to maintain and enforce safety, security, and custodial measures, and direct the management of the facility in the absence of the Warden. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Develop, establish, and implement facility policies, procedures, and objectives. 
  • Formulate operating procedures for areas of assignment and recommend improvements to Warden. 
  • Participate in staff selection, training and evaluate staff performance. 
  • May confer with offender’s family on issues such as visitations, commissary. 
  • Assist with facility budget preparation. 
  • Partner with various groups on outreach programs and media regarding facility operations. 
  • Coordinate, participate in, and investigate staff/offender issues and discipline. 
  • Coordinate activities of the internal offender disciplinary board. 
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development. 
  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.  Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Five (5) years full time, paid professional experience in corrections, criminology, law enforcement, psychology, social work, or related fields. 
  • Two (2) years full time, paid experience as a supervisor in any of the above areas. One year of the above supervisory experience must have been within a large correctional or rehabilitative facility.   
  • Extensive knowledge of the correctional law, regulations, and court decisions. 
  • Advanced knowledge of methods and operations used in treatment, rehabilitation and resocialization 
  • Advanced knowledge of public administration principles. 
  • Ability to supervise, plan, organize, and coordinate the programs and activities of the facility. 
  • Ability to effectively handle precedented challenges that may arise in a correctional facility. 
  • Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow. 
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
