This is highly responsible administrative work assisting the appointing authority in the direction, supervision and organization of the programs, administration, or operations divisions at Miami Correctional Facility.   The incumbent formulates either all operating and security functions or program functions of the facility; interprets and carries out the policies of the Department of correction.  Incumbent supervises a large staff in maintaining and enforcing, disciplinary, safety, security, and custodial measures, and directs the management of the institution in the absence of the Superintendent.  General duties include but are not limited to participating in developing, establishing, and implementing institutional policies, procedures and objectives; formulating operating procedures for areas of assignment and recommending operational or program improvements to Superintendent

Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Directs the formulation and installation of policy rules, and regulations for the custody of residents
  • Assists the Superintendent in administering all phases of the institution’s custodial program
  • Transmits and enforces orders to custody staff, directs the activities of the fire department, armory and emergency squad
  • Makes routine inspectional tours of the facility and reports on equipment cleanliness, sanitation, and operating efficiency of the facility
  • Utilizes custodial staff in an efficient manner making certain the strategic posts are always covered
  • Supervises activities of inmate kitchen and dining room
  • Coordinates activities with National Guard, State Police and other law enforcement agencies on security matters of institution
  • Participates in developing, establishing, and implementing institutional policies, procedures and objectives; formulates operating procedures for areas of assignment and recommends operational or program improvements to Superintendent.
  • Participates in the selection and training of staff and evaluates staff performance.
  • Exercises responsibility for the discipline of residents.
  • Confers with residents – families on such things as program and discipline.
  • Assists in the facility budget preparation.
  • Speaks to lay and professional groups regarding the various facility programs.
  • Investigates breaches of discipline, conducts hearings, and take disciplinary action.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
