About the Correctional Industrial Facility:
The Correctional Industrial Facility (CIF) is a medium security facility located on 89 acres in Pendleton, IN, and established in 1985. Currently, CIF houses over 1,400 male offenders, and the facility offers many opportunities to its offender population. This includes the opportunity to work, obtain their High School Equivalent, and be involved in facility-led programs.  One specific program, PLUS (Purposeful Living Units Serve), is a faith- and character-based program aimed at helping offenders avoid criminal behavior by teaching them to demonstrate the following core values: honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, compassion and tolerance. CIF also has 4 different programs for our offenders that deal with animals, including ICAN (Indiana Canine Assistance Network), a facility apprenticeship program which allows inmates to train dogs to become service animals to assist the disabled.

 

Salary Information:

This role starts at a base salary of $42,510.00 annually.

About the Job:

As a Correctional Sergeant, you will be responsible for work involving the supervision of offenders in a correctional facility.  The Correctional Sergeant supervises Correctional Officers on an assigned shift in an assigned area. You will report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Maintain order and security of offenders in facility.
  • Assist supervisor in appropriate administration of security-related operations (key control, count, shakedowns, searches, inventory, equipment maintenance, radios, security systems, etc.).
  • Supervise offenders in various work details including both within the facility and outside the facility.
  • Escort offenders both inside the facility and on various trips away from the facility.
  • Assist in identifying offender treatment needs and support treatment programs.
  • Maintain records and write reports on offender movement, offender progress, and violations of policies and procedures.
  • Remain alert for signs of disorder or tension.
  • Counsel offenders in an informal and unofficial capacity.
  • Follow and ensure compliance with established security procedures.
  • Supervise a Correctional Officer or a group of Correctional Officers.
  • Encourage offenders to accept professional assistance from staff.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must test negative on all drug screenings.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, procedures and practices utilized in a correctional environment
  • Ability to control and direct activities of offenders
  • Ability to effectively provide leadership and supervision over staff
  • Extensive knowledge of department policies and procedures involving custody operations
  • Ability to react quickly and effectively to a situation jeopardizing the health or safety of an offender or staff person
  • Ability to work well with supervisor, subordinates, offenders, facility and department staff and, on occasion, members of the public

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides supervision for offenders and requires a high level of judgment and care.
This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
