Summary/Objective:

Correctional Training Officer provides specialized instructional work in specialized programs at the Correctional Training Institute (CTI) or a correctional institution. This role works independently in instruction of classes and preparation of lesson plans.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Conducts staff education and training sessions either alone or with other training officers
  • Conducts specialized in-service training classes and orientation classes for new employees
  • Analyzes effectiveness of training programs and makes recommendations for changes
  • Develops training programs and training aids to meet specific needs
  • Researches and updates training material
  • Assists in organizing special workshops and seminars
  • Tests, measures and evaluates participant performance
  • Provides counseling, tutoring and special guidance to trainees
  • Serves as consultant and technical expert to all departments related to special area of expertise
  • Coordinates institution training committee identifying institutional training needs
  • Participates on the Department of Correction’s training committee.

Requirements:
  • Specialized knowledge of agency function, operation and purpose
  • Specialized knowledge of departmental rules and regulations
  • Advanced knowledge of training methods and correctional techniques
  • Specialized knowledge of correctional facility management and operation including custody and control, security procedures, rehabilitation programs and techniques
  • Specialized knowledge of psychology, sociology and criminology
  • Specialized knowledge of training aids and materials
  • Ability to prepare and execute detailed daily and weekly lesson plans and to determine and adhere to agency objectives
  • Ability to evaluate performance and progress of trainees and to analyze overall effectiveness of courses
  • Ability to keep current on new trends, philosophies and available materials regarding adult education, area of expertise and changing needs of trainees based on changing objectives of agency
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish effective and cooperative working relationships with trainees, other instructors and entire agency staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role provides supervision for offenders and requires a high level of judgment and care.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
