About the Family & Social Services Administration: 

The Division of Family Resources (DFR) within the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) is responsible for establishing eligibility for Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits. The division also manages the timely and accurate delivery of SNAP and TANF benefits.  DFR also provides employment and training services to some SNAP and TANF recipients. The division’s overarching focus is the support and preservation of families by emphasizing self-sufficiency and personal responsibility. 


Salary:   The annual minimum starting salary for this position is $ 30,082.00.   

About the Job:

The State Eligibility Consultant is responsible for evaluating applications to determine eligibility for Food Stamps, Medicaid, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), etc.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Review and approves or rejects eligibility recommendations made by contract staff for appropriate benefits and waiver programs;
  • Follows all directives given by the State Eligibility Manager/Local Office Manager/Deputy Regional Manager/Regional Manager;
  • Examines Data Matches to discern discrepant and unreported data;
  • Approves claims referred and calculated by the Contractor;
  • Approve or deny auxiliary benefit requests and under issuance requests; authorizes fiats
  • Conducts full eligibility interviews for SNAP, TANF and Medicaid applicants;
  • Insures that all clients are treated in a courteous, professional, and empathetic manner;
  • Keeps current on all changes in rules, regulations and guidelines regarding the individual benefit programs; completion of all trainings are timely;

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Five (5) years of work experience in counseling; social services; education; public administration; or accredited college training in a related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of public assistance policy, practices and procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local rules and regulations related to public assistance programs;
  • Working knowledge of computerized eligibility systems;
  • Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions;
  • Ability to use tact and empathy in dealing with people from varied backgrounds;
  • Ability to use discretion in dealing with all client’s and fellow employee’s personal information;
  • Demonstrates effective communication and interview skills, ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; 
  • Ability to be flexible and self-motivated in managing multiple priorities and to use time management techniques in order to complete job assignments in a timely manner;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations;
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to maintain valid driver’s license.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
