The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a statewide museum system with 12 locations including the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis and 11 historic sites in the Indiana communities of Evansville, Corydon, New Albany, Rome City, Madison, Fountain City, Geneva, New Harmony, Nashville, Vincennes, and Metamora.

About Whitewater Canal State Historic Site:

Located in historic Metamora, Whitewater Canal State Historic Site (WCSHS) was acquired by the State of Indiana in 1946 and includes a 14-mile section of the Whitewater Canal. Visitors to the site can explore the history of canal transportation inside the Grist Mill where they can see grain griding demonstrations that produce fresh cornmeal each day. Guided tours are offered at the site, during which visitors can learn about the Duck Creek Aqueduct, a National Historic Landmark, and the only structure of its kind in the United States. Special programming and school field trips are also offered at the site that is open to the public March – October.

Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $45,000 but is commesurate with education and experience.

About the Job:

Site Managers at each of the 11 State Historic Sites are responsible for all facets of site management, broken into three broad categories of Operations, Product and Community. Each respective historic site in the ISMHS museum system will also have responsibilities that are specific to an individual site.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

OPERATIONS:

  • Develop a long-range operational plan for the site – including staffing, admissions, equipment needs, etc.
  • Develop and monitor an annual budget for the site.
  • Work within the ISMHS museum system (Marketing, Development, Education and Programming, Facilities, Security, Collections, Engagement departments) to identify and plan needs for WCSHS.
  • Learn and operate Altru – a comprehensive ticketing, fundraising and membership management software product utilized across the ISMHS museum system.
  • Complete all administrative tasks – including required reports (attendance, fiscal, payroll, site usage, etc.)
  • Oversee all day-to-day operations for the site including hiring, training, and scheduling of site staff and volunteers. Develop workplans for site staff and complete annual performance appraisals.
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of State and Federal laws and procedures pertaining to historic sites.
  • Supervising all daily operations and activities at the site.
  • Supervising the property including daily checks for issues requiring action, immediate and long-term.

PRODUCT:

  • Oversee and assist site programming staff in the development and implementation of programs, tours, and interpretation of the site.
  • Serve as the content expert and resource for historic aspects of the site.
  • Become familiar with American Association of Museum (AAM) standards related to the care and accountability of historic artifacts and specimens.
  • Evaluate visitor experience and adjust and/or make improvements to the product as warranted. Responsible for resolving any visitor issues or complaints.
  • Identify and collaborate with ISMHS historic preservation and facilities staff any necessary building/site restoration, repair, or construction needs.
  • Work with Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA), Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) as needed for issues related to site.

COMMUNITY:

  • Identify community members, legislators, and organizations to form professional relationships, collaborations, and partnerships in and around the communities that WCSHS serves.
  • Work with the ISMHS Development staff to identify and implement grants, corporate sponsorship, and general operational supplemental support of WCSHS.
  • Attend and/or participate in targeted community events to enhance professional relationships.
  • Meet with media that serve Metamora and surrounding communities to provide accurate and current information about the site.
  • Make presentations to community partners as needed to keep community informed of site updates.
  • Form a working relationship with Franklin County Tourism staff to enhance promotion of the site.
  • Serve as the “face” of WCSHS.

What You'll Need for Success:

Upon entering role, individuals must have or obtain the following requirements:

  • At least five (5) years of related management experience in a visitor-centric environment that may include children's museums, science centers, art museums, historic sites, history museums, cultural centers, etc.
  • Community partnering and communication skills are essential to the success of this position and this site.
  • Detailed attention to daily operations including visitor experience, site cleanliness and regular property checks.
  • Ability to think big picture – both operationally and strategically – at a time when the site is poised to undergo some large historic preservation projects with potential for impact to daily visitor experience.
  • Have a strong working knowledge of institutional system-wide procedures pertaining to fiscal control, purchasing and personnel management.
  • Have strong interpersonal and intrapersonal skills and the ability to solve problems and to negotiate.
  • Demonstrate strong writing skills.
  • Have computer skills in:  Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and capacity to learn other programs.
