About the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site
 
The Whitewater Canal State Historic Site commemorates canal transportation and commerce in Indiana.  The canal was essential for farmers and merchants to transport goods and livestock.  The canal was 76 miles long.  It started in Lawrenceburg and ended in Cambridge City. At one point, a 25-mile spur linked the canal to Cincinnati.  the historic site is located in Metamora, an example of the towns that grew along the canal.  The Metamora Grist Mill is still active at the site, using water power to produce corn meal.  The mill has been in use for over 100 years.

 

Role Overview

 

As the Historical Site Interpreter at Whitewater Canal State Historic Site, you will primarily be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Metamora Grist Mill and other duties assigned around the historic site. This role will be for at least 30 hours/week over 4 days.

 


Salary Statement

The salary for this position is $16.73 per hour. 

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Responsible for interpreting all aspects of the site including but not limited to the following duties:

    • Guided tours

    • Educational and Public Programming assistance

    • Special events

    • Gift shop sales

    • Landscape maintenance

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must have excellent people skills, be comfortable interacting with large groups of people and children, and display a love of history

  • Ability to learn facts and retain information

  • Must have or be willing to acquire knowledge of the site and surrounding area

  • Must be organized and responsible

  • Must be able to work unsupervised as necessary

  • Must be able to operate cash registers and handle money

  • Weekends and some evening hours required

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
