About Logansport State Hospital (LSH):

Logansport State Hospital provides specialized inpatient psychiatric services to assist people in achieving mental health recovery in a safe and respectful environment.

 

Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an hourly wage of $14.54.

About the Job:

The Special Attendant performs responsible non-professional work providing for the nursing care, general welfare and security of patients assigned to the Maximum Security Unit of Logansport State Hospital and Westville Correctional Center.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Assists residents with bathing, dressing, shaving, feeding and leisure-time activities.
  • Ensures security of residents and maintains orderliness which occasionally requires restraining unruly, dangerous residents.
  • Observes, reports and records the condition and behavior of residents.
  • Reinforces residents on acceptable behavior and works with them on daily basis to modify adverse behavior.
  • Assists in implementation of resident’s treatment plan.
  • Escorts residents to and from various activity and therapy areas within building and off-grounds ensuring maximum security.
  • Assists residents in cleaning and caring for their living areas, clothing and supplies.
  • Supervises and/or participates with groups of patients in activities and encourages cooperation.
  • Assists in maintaining a therapeutic, sanitary, safe and secure environment.
  • Secures doors, searches visitors, operates radio system, issues keys and conducts visitors to various areas of unit as needed.
  • Takes and records vital signs and administers medications as prescribed.
  • Maintains radio contact with other wards and areas of building as needed.

What We're Looking For:

You're an ideal candidate if you have received your high school diploma or completed your High School Equivalency (HSE) certificate.

What You'll Need for Success
  • Specialized knowledge of, and ability to apply, psychiatric nursing care practices including administering medications.
  • Specialized knowledge of, and ability to apply, behavior modification, self-defense and restraining techniques as needed without injury to residents.
  • Working knowledge of residents behavior and ability to anticipate and deal with behavior changes on a daily basis.
  • Working knowledge of institution and unit procedures.
  • Ability to perform and assist residents in performing housekeeping duties and daily living activities.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to write reports and keep records and charts accurately.
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations and to control adverse behavior.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
