Indiana Family & Social Services Administration

Summary/Objective:

The Director of Nursing Services is responsible for developing, coordinating, directing and supervising the nursing programs for an inpatient psychiatric facility.  

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Develops, evaluates and changes, as necessary, standards, policies and procedures for nursing services;
  • Analyzes utilization of nursing staff and recommends changes in staff as necessary to agency management;
  • Assesses the effectiveness of orientation programs for nurses and attendant staff and recommends changes as required;
  • Evaluates in-service training programs for psychiatric attendants and rehabilitation therapy assistants and coordinates these program changes with agency management;
  • Serves on the administrative staff of the hospital and represents the hospital at a variety of administrative and professional meetings;
  • Consults with the Medical Director, complex directors, department directors, and executive committee members on a variety of medical, nursing and administrative matters;
  • Works closely with the Human Resources division on the recruitment, selection, promotion, discipline and termination of nursing and direct care staff.

Requirements:
  • Must possess a license as a registered nurse by the State of Indiana;
  • Broad knowledge of modern principles and practices of psychiatric nursing, mental retardation and developmental disabilities;
  • Thorough knowledge of administration, management and human relations principles and practices;
  • Knowledge of appropriate federal and state laws and regulations and Immediate Care Facility (ICF)/ Mental Retardation (MR)/Developmental Disability (DD) Certification requirements;
  • Knowledge of the State of Indiana personnel management policies and procedures in hiring, promoting, disciplining and terminating employees;
  • Knowledge of the Hospital Affirmative Action program and plan;
  • Complete knowledge of the role of other treatment professionals and therapists and the ability to work with these professionals in providing the best possible individual treatment;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to conduct effective meetings and training sessions.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
