About the Indiana State Department of Health
The Indiana State Department of Health’s mission is to promote and provide essential public health services for a healthier and safer state.
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $37,778. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
The Program Director administers a program within a state agency and serves as a specialist in this area. The director utilizes education, consultation, cooperative programming and coordination to accomplish goals.
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Formulates, interprets, compiles and disseminates, to applicable agencies and groups, all policies and procedures related to the program;
Reviews incoming policy or procedural information for decisions on distribution;
- Acts as technical consultant to the staff, clarifying and interpreting all procedures, providing references and resolving disputed issues;
- Serves as a liaison between agency and other state and federal agencies;
- Assists leadership in evaluating proposed programs in specialist area;

- Establishes program goals, priorities and methodology;
- Broad knowledge of an entire program area;
- Extensive knowledge of all source materials and references including federal and state laws governing the programs;
- Working knowledge of the organization of the agency and of state and federal agencies dealing with the programs;
- Working knowledge of accounting and budget principles;
- Ability to comprehend, analyze, interpret and correlate technical material and make recommendations on implementation in current programs;
- Ability to develop and implement new principles and policies and discern potential implications;
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing;
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with federal and state agencies.
