Unpaid Internship:

The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) summer internship program is an unpaid summer internship that lasts approximately 3.5 months.

About the Job:

This position will serve as a Public Relations Intern for the Public Information Office of the Indiana Department of Transportation.  The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support.  The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern be located at the agency’s Northwest District Office in LaPorte and will report to the Public Relations Director. 

A Day in the Life:

  • Preparation and distribution of written communications (news releases, talking points, etc.)
  • Social media content creation and monitoring (Facebook and Twitter)
  • Gathering photos and videos of INDOT projects across district
  • Attend district meetings as needed (pre-construction conferences, progress meetings, public hearings, etc.)
  • Public event planning as needed (groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Business, or related field
  • Relevant work experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
