Role Overview:
This position will serve as a Traffic Intern for the La Porte Technical Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of traffic data analysis and project planning. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities.
Hourly Rate:
The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Performs complex traffic analysis utilizing traffic analysis software
- Assists the District Traffic Engineer with various traffic study and project planning tasks
- Conducts audits of various construction and permit projects, evaluating maintenance of traffic setups, speed limits, queues, and overall safety concerns
- Attends field checks, pre-construction meetings, and pre-final inspection walk-throughs of construction projects, representing the traffic and safety interests
- Reviews pavement marking documentation from contractors and provides feedback

What You'll Need for Success:
- Working towards a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field
- Relevant work experience preferred
- Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
- Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
- Analytical skills
- Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
