Role Overview:
Position is a highway design-engineering assistant within INDOT’s District Capital Program Management division. In this role you will generate standard detailed drawings using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software, including MicroStation, confers with higher level engineers and technicians to perform standard engineering design of various in-house design projects, such as culverts, traffic maintenance, traffic control, and general roadway plans. Under supervision, assist in the development of plans, specifications, and engineering estimates for various partial 3R and maintenance plans. You may design minor projects and maintenance projects and completes the associated plans from start to finish with little or no engineer assistance. Projects require broad technical knowledge in the planning and execution of detailed drawings from engineers’ notes and rough sketches. Must be able to become a proficient user of INDOT’s CADD software and possess a solid understanding of design policy and standards. Communicates regularly with engineers, technicians, Project Managers, and other stakeholders. Reports to the Design Manager or Lead Design Engineer.

This position is located in INDOT’s Laporte District, Capital Program Management Department.
Salary:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $53,222.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Generates detailed drawings based on engineering standards using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software and manual drafting techniques (these drawings may involve drainage, traffic maintenance, traffic control, general roadway, structures, right-of-way, signals, landscaping, or lighting).
- Collects field data for INDOT in-house designed projects using manual and other data collection methods; coordinates activities with other departments to gather necessary field data; organizes and keeps data in electronic format; provides information to Design Engineer as requested.
- Calculates and summarizes plan and project quantities including calculations for pavement, concrete, earthwork, and seeding quantities, and other quantities as necessary.
- Develops a design project from start to finish with minimal guidance; completes tasks and works independently on a variety of project types.
- Creates drawings based on complicated details and creates any sheet necessary for production of plans using drafting principles and INDOT standards.
- Render directions and explanations of various plans and specifications for use by contractors.
- Interprets and plots base site topography, profiles, and cross sections from downloads of electronic field survey information.
- Consults with P.E. level designers regarding special design situations.
- Assists with special projects and other departments by applying good drafting techniques to other aspects of agency work.
- Keeps up to date on current computer technology and design practices by participating in peer groups, reviewing trade publications, reading reports, attending conferences, and participating in training seminars.
- Assists with other projects as assigned, specifically those requiring non-standard solutions or involve vendor specific drawings.
- Coordinates and communicates with all project team members and stakeholders, which may include other divisions within the agency, regulatory agencies, consultants, and the public on project specific information such as interpretations of project plan drawings, schedules, and various project needs.
- Coordinates and conducts field checks.
Participates in winter operations (e.g., snow and ice removal) as necessary.

What You'll Need for Success:
Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.
- Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time, as well as walking on traverse, steep and slippery slopes, climb.
- Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather:
- Considerable knowledge of highway statutory, departmental, and administrative laws, rules, and regulations; Ability to operate specialty traffic equipment (e.g., bucket trucks, paint equipment, etc.…).
- Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team. Experience in traffic control, confined space, boating safety; Ability to use a geographical positioning system (GPS).
- Broad knowledge of Microsoft computer programs to include Word, Outlook, Excel, and Access; Ability to read and interpret bridge plans.
- Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
- Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
