Role Overview: 

Seasonal construction employees will be inspecting construction sites while working alongside other highway technicians. They will make sure INDOT construction contracts are being built per plan, on time and budget, while ensuring the traveling public is safe.  This position allows relief in the ever-increasing amount of testing and data logging on construction contracts.  This position can enable students studying Engineering and Construction Management to develop relationships and potentially lead to permanent employment with INDOT.

 

Salary

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $18.00 an hour.

 

Location

This position is located in the INDOT's following counties: Lake, Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Newton, Jasper, Starke, Pulaski, Marshall, Fulton, Cass, White and Carroll.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential elements of the job duties: 

  • Performs onsite construction inspection and materials sampling and testing, including the operation of a variety of engineering and testing equipment (i.e. survey equipment, density testing, concrete air and slump test equipment, etc.)
  • Interprets, recommends revisions, and ensures adherence to construction plans, contract documents, and specifications
  • Communicates observed deficiencies to appropriate individuals and monitors steps taken as corrective actions
  • Makes math computations, prepares sketches and completes a variety of daily and periodic reports as required

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent preferred
  • Required to submit and pass a drug test as a condition of employment
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time
  • Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather
  • Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team
  • Ability to apply highway principles and procedures as needed
  • Must be able to adequately perform computer skills

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
