The Adjutant General's Office:

$17.00/hour, plus time and a half for mandatory overtime ($25.50/hour).  Staff is typically scheduled four to six, 12 hour shifts a week.

Cadre Team Leaders - Hoosier Youth Challenge Academy, Knightstown:

The mission of the Hoosier Youth Challenge Academy (HYCA) is to intervene in and reclaim the lives of at-risk youth to produce program graduates with the values, skills, education and self-discipline necessary to succeed as adults.  This program provides training, including supervised work experience in community service and conservation programs, to civilian youth who cease to attend secondary school before graduating so as to improve their life skills and employment potential. 


Team Leaders work a nonstandard work week (which may require rotation between day, evening and graveyard shift, and may include weekends and holidays). Work is frequently outdoors subject to inclement weather and other environmental conditions.


Day Shift schedule: 5:30am - 5:30pm; Night Shift schedule: 5:30pm - 5:30am


This position is overtime eligible, compensated with wages or possibly compensatory time up to 75hrs to utilized when Cadets are not on campus; which occurs around and includes the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Memorial Day, and the 4th of July, as well as a break between cycles.

A Day in the Life:

Team Leaders are assigned to a Team of Cadets, whom they work with the majority of their shifts. The Team Leader is the direct supervisor of the Cadets and is primarily responsible for Cadet accountability, discipline and safety; enforcement of Academy rules and policies; instruction of drill and ceremony; physical-fitness training; movement of Cadets according to the training schedule; completing administrative reports; and, providing assistance in tutoring of academics.  


Acting as a positive role model Team Leaders also play an important role in ensuring cadet completion of the 8-core objectives, (Academic Excellence, Physical Fitness, Job Skills, Leadership/Followership, Responsible Citizenship, Service to Community, Health & Hygiene, and Life Coping Skills). Teaching the Cadets life-skills through:  positive mentoring; leading by example; providing counseling; teaching basic social skills; enforcing standards; helping to build self-confidence and problem solving abilities; developing leadership and teamwork skills; and, providing instruction/facilitation of Challenge tasks.

What We're Looking For:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum age of 21
What You'll Need For Success:
  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Available to work a flexible schedule Substitution: graduation from an accredited two or four-year college or university with major coursework in Criminal Justice or a related field, experience in individual or group counseling, experience working with high school aged at-risk and/or special needs youth preferred, or experience, paid or volunteer, teaching or coaching group activities for youth ages 16 -18
  • First Aid and CPR certification required or ability to obtain such certification
  • Strong communication, supervisory, interpersonal and organizational skills. Must be detail oriented. 
  • Ability to enforce disciplinary, safety and security measures.
  • Some knowledge of adolescent development, human behavior and team dynamics.
  • Ability to teach adolescents leadership, teamwork, service to community, health, hygiene, physical training, first aid and CPR, and outdoor skills.
  • Ability to promote socially acceptable attitudes and behaviors, use tact, recognize that value systems may vary, treat individuals with respect and consideration, reason logically and arrive at sound conclusions..
  • Ability to make sound decisions and remain calm under stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to perform work outdoors and withstand inclement weather and other environmental conditions.
  • Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the job. This includes conducting and performing rigorous physical fitness training, to include hiking with a backpack over rough terrain, running from one mile up to five miles, and demonstrating a variety of physical fitness exercise routines, such as push ups, sit ups, etc.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.  
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
