About the Indiana Board of Animal Health:


Animals have contributed a lot to Indiana's history, providing food, income, recreation, assistance and companionship to millions of Hoosiers everyday. State lawmakers recognized the value of those relationships in 1889, when they created the office of the State Veterinarian and the Livestock Sanitary Commission.


Today, that commission, now known as the Board of Animal Health (BOAH), operates under the direction of an 11-member Board of animal industry professionals who meet quarterly to set agency policy.  While the original mission to "prevent and suppress contagious and infectious diseases among the livestock," has not changed in over 100 years, the scope of BOAH's work has expanded:

  • to enhance Indiana's economy by protecting Hoosiers' investment in animal agriculture, wildlife, horses and companion animals.
  • to protect public health by preventing and controlling the spread of animal diseases, such as rabies, which pose a threat to people.
  • to maintain a vital link in a safe food supply through the state meat and poultry and dairy inspection programs.
  • to help people and their animals who are victims of large-scale disasters such as floods and tornadoes.



Role Overview:


The Meat Inspector implements the provisions of the Indiana Meat and Poultry Inspection Humane Slaughter Act and the rules and regulations promulgated there under. You will also be responsible for assuring the production of safe, unadulterated, properly labeled meat and poultry products produced in their assigned establishment(s) using sound principles of food public health and food safety. You will inspect livestock and poultry slaughter and processing plants that hold a Grant of Inspection or a Grant of Exemption issued by the Meat and Poultry Division (MPI) of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH).


This position will cover Dubois County.


A Day in the Life:


The essential functions of this position are:

  • Performs ante mortem and postmortem slaughter inspections in MPI official establishments.
  • Inspects, evaluates, & verifies establishments comply with humane handling, non-ambulatory animal, and slaughtering regulatory requirements.
  • Inspects slaughtering procedure and verifies carcasses comply with HACCP zero tolerance and BSE specified risk material [SRM].
  • Verify assigned plant Sanitation Standard Operating Procedure (SSOP), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and pathogen reduction programs comply with the regulations.
  • Properly identifies & collects samples for animal disease control programs.
  • Evaluates and verifies the plant’s handling procedures, formulations, and production of meat and poultry products comply with the plant’s SSOP and HACCP plans.
  • Conducts re-inspection of carcasses, meat products (during processing and in storage), and returned product for proper identification or labeling, evidence of mishandling, contamination or adulteration.
  • Monitors and evaluates pest control programs.
  • Evaluates the acceptability of all chemicals and ingredients used in the processing of meat or meat products.
  • Checks products for proper labeling and stamping, reviews and assists in the submission of label applications to central office.
  • Maintain, prepare, and submit prescribed files and records pertaining to assigned work in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the training of other inspectors and agency personnel.
  • Collects, properly identifies, and maintains a chain of custody of samples as required.
  • Submits timely accurate reports of the performance of all aspects of the Public Health Inspection Service (PHIS) system.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) with preferred experience with meat cutting, working with livestock (4H) or farming.
  • At least six (6) months of experience as a meat inspector in a state or federal food safety program or more than one year of experience in the meat processing industry. Successful completion of a state or federal meat inspector training program.      
  • Must be able to recall information from many sources, including antemortem and postmortem inspection and processing inspection training, codes, rules and regulations, memos, bulletins, and other reference materials, and apply this information in the performance of the required inspection of slaughter and processing in the assigned plants.  
  • Must be able to function independently in work locations that may be unpleasant by conditions such as extreme heat and cold, high moisture, excessive noise, and foul odors.
  • Must consistently use appropriate judgment in deciding the proper regulatory action needed to prevent improper disposition of meat products resulting in exposing the public to unsafe meat or food-borne disease and/or monetary loss to the plant, disgruntled employees, and irate, dissatisfied consumers.
  • Must be capable of conducting required inspections in accordance with regulatory guidelines and enforcing the regulations in assigned establishment(s).
  • Must have the ability to maintain a professional regulatory relationship and communicate with establishment owners, operators and employees thereby obtaining effective compliance with the regulations.
  • Must be able to drive alone in all seasons.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

Salary Information:


Salary for this position traditionally starts at $28,106 - $30,916 per year, but may be commensurate with experience or education.
