About the Indiana Department of Natural Resources:

 

The mission of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is to protect, enhance, preserve, and wisely use natural, cultural, and recreational resources for the benefit of Indiana's citizens through professional leadership, management, and education.  This position is with the Division of Reclamation.


Position Overview:

 

The Engineer will work within the Restoration Program office to restore land previously used for, or disturbed by, coal mining.    You will evaluate, conceptualize, and develop reclamation designs that are consistent with federal and state laws and all regulatory requirements.  Reclamation programs are a cooperative effort between Indiana and the U.S. Department of the Interior.

A Day in the Life:

 

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Investigate sites to determine design approach and scope of work.
  • Develop existing site layout and topographic maps.
  • Perform detailed engineering calculations to determine regrade quantities, rock volumes, ditch, and culvert design.
  • Determine adequate erosion and sediment control measures to be installed, including terracing, drainage ditch design, gradient control structures, and vegetative measures.
  • Design abatement or reduction of hazards associated with highwalls, mine subsidence, abandoned mine shafts, and other abandoned mine related issues.
  • Evaluate and determine abatement solutions for acid mine drainage and design water treatment systems to neutralize impounded acid water to meet effluent limitations.
  • Formulate construction cost estimates to provide a base cost for funding requests and bid analysis.
  • Develop plans, specifications, and construction documents to abate or reduce hazards.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Knowledge and skill typically acquired through a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, mining engineering, geological, or agricultural engineering plus related work experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of civil and conservation/environmental engineering.
  • Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations relative to engineering in the field of land reclamation.
  • Thorough knowledge of acid mine drainage and solutions and ability to apply this knowledge through design plans and specifications.
  • Specialized knowledge of coal mining practices, both deep mine techniques and surface mine methods.
  • Specialized knowledge of soil mechanics, hydrology, geology, agronomy, and forestry.
  • Specialized knowledge of surveying principles and practices.
  • Specialized knowledge of reclamation construction practices.
  • Ability to communicate highly technical information both written and orally.
  • Ability to comprehend and utilize technical and professional publications.
  • Ability to apply drafting practices and procedures.
  • Ability to use a computer aided drafting system and associated engineering and surveying software to complete work projects.
  • Ability to coordinate cooperative projects and programs.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer within the State of Indiana or ability to become registered is preferred but not required.
  • Must maintain a vaild drivers license in order to complete assigned duties and responsibilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.

Salary Information:

 

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $47,476 - $52,223 per year and is commensurate with education and experience.
