About the Commission for Higher Education: 
Created in 1971, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE, Commission) is the State's higher education coordinating agency, driven to improve economic and social mobility for fellow Hoosiers through postsecondary education and training, and is a part of Governor Mike Braun's Office of Education. Role Overview: 

The Webmaster is responsible for the day-to-day management, performance, and continuous improvement of the websites and digital platforms for both the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) and the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). This role ensures that all web properties are user-friendly, accessible, secure, technically reliable, and aligned with agency branding and communication priorities. The Webmaster collaborates closely with program teams, communications staff, IT staff, and external partners to maintain accurate, timely digital content that meets the needs of Indiana students, families, educators, institutions, and stakeholders.

 

Salary:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $75,000.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.

 

A Day in the Life:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Manage, update, and maintain content across CHE and IDOE websites using approved CMS platforms.
  • Ensure all web content meets accessibility standards (WCAG/ADA), state requirements, and best practices for usability.
  • Oversee website architecture, navigation, and content strategy to ensure clear, intuitive user experiences.
  • Monitor website performance, uptime, and security in coordination with IT teams.
  • Collaborate with communications teams to publish timely announcements, data, reports, multimedia, and program information.
  • Conduct regular content audits to maintain accuracy, relevancy, and consistency across pages.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to hosting, CMS functionality, forms, integrations, and plugins.
  • Implement search engine optimization best practices to improve discoverability and clarity of public information.
  • Lead, incollaboration with the State's IOT team, major web refreshes, redesigns, migrations, and special digital projects.
  • Train internal staff on CMS use, content standards, accessibility, and digital communication best practices.
  • Represent CHE and IDOE on the IOT IN.Gov Advisory Council.

Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
 

What You'll Need for Success:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in web development, information technology, digital communications, communications, or related area is required, 3-5 years of professional work experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing medium-to-large websites through a CMS (e.g., WordPress, SquizMatrix, dotCMS, etc.) preferred.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1), responsive design, and usability best practices preferred.
  • Strong creative, writing, strategic, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a communicator, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team; manage multiple projects/priorities simultaneously and to thrive in a fast-paced, high-profile work environment.
  • Strong toubleshooting, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
     

Difficulty of Work:

Work is specialized in managing multiple projects and priorities, which require strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational and interpersonal abilities. Mature judgment and the ability to work under intense scrutiny are essential to the position.
