About the Job:

The Epidemiologist is responsible for the preparation, evaluation, analysis, and reporting of vital records data. This role is responsible for monitoring a wide spectrum of vital records, conducting data analysis, submitting data to the CDC, SSA, NCHS, BMV, FSSA, DCS and myriad other state and federal agencies. Must write state reports and prepare legislatively required and other requested reports in support of vital records' focus areas.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Identifies where data is housed, how it is collected, and how it is used within the agency.
  • Develops and implements vital statistics data and surveillance plan and identifies data gaps.
  • Collects, manages, and analyzes vital records data from various sources
  • Summarizes and disseminates data analysis results related to vital records. This includes writing reports, oral presentations, and manuscripts on key findings, disseminating data effectively to a variety of audiences, and offering policy recommendations to the State Registrar.
  • Provides assistance with grant proposal preparation and grants management, particularly as related to data, reporting, and evaluation.
  • Assists with agreements to share data with other agencies through MOUs.
  • Track those who access vital records data and ensure that security requirements are being met.
  • Collaborates with members of the Epidemiology Resource Center and responds to epidemiologic needs of the Vital Records Division, including internal and external data requests.
  • Provides epidemiologic expertise and technical assistance to internal and external partners, including state agencies and coalitions.
  • Assists staff and state health officials in preparing reports and communications on epidemiology of vital records.
  • Actively participate in ongoing intra- and inter-agency collaborations and initiatives related to vital records.
  • Actively participate in all aspects of the implementation of the new electronic registration system; this
  • includes attending meetings, analyzing datasets, and providing subject matter expertise where needed.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Thorough knowledge of public health principles and practices, epidemiology, study design, and study analysis.
  • Extensive experience in the use of statistical software for data analysis; working knowledge of SAS.
  • Considerable knowledge of computers and competent in using software applications including: Microsoft
  • Word, Access, and Excel
  • Considerable knowledge of available injury databases, qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and their limitations
  • Advanced ability to develop assessment protocols
  • Extensive ability to communicate with health care and public health professionals, policy makers, agency staff, and the general public both verbally and in writing
  • Advanced ability to work cooperatively with staff and representatives of State, Local, Federal and private partner agencies and to coordinate efforts of administrative and professional personnel
  • Extensive ability to prepare research documents and reports
  • Extensive ability to interpret information relative to epidemiologic and assessment studies
  • Advanced experience in the writing of formal reports and articles and oral presentations
  • Working knowledge of organizational structure, administrative process, and quality improvement
  • Considerable skill in coordinating complex work tasks
