Salary: 

The starting hourly wage for this position is $13.21 per hour. 

About the Job:

The Visitor Center Ambassador works in the Visitor's Center of White River State Park performing a variety of office and other clerical duties. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Promptly, professionally and courteously receives 100% of Park visitors;
  • Promptly, professionally and courteously answers incoming calls/inquiries, directs and/or records, and relays messages to the appropriate party in a timely manner;
  • Retrieve messages as they appear on the 233-2434 line, and periodically check for messages on the 800 line;
  • Always arrive promptly as scheduled to allow time for opening procedures;
  • Adept at using features of the telephone system and voice mail, fax machine, credit card machine and cash register; 
  • Cash Handling Procedures:
    • The cash reserve box should never be left unattended when removed from the locked area;
    • Obtaining change from the cash reserve for the register should occur at the beginning, or end of a shift. If an emergency need for change occurs during business hours, a Manager or appropriate administrative staff member should be notified;
    • Money in the cash register should not be bundled with straps or clips;
    • All currency $20.00 and over is to be checked with a counterfeit bill detector pen;
  • Notify receipt of certified mail. Do not sign for certified mail addressed to separate entity (Wheel Fun etc.);
  • Do not sort mail -  Exceptions: Wheel Fun Rentals and Segway (notify them they have received mail);
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters and avoid gossip;
  • When on duty, ensure the reception station is staffed 100% of the time, and remain inside the building;
  • Assist visitors in finding events to do in the Park, as well as the City of Indianapolis;
  • Maintain & re-stock brochure racks. Re-order brochures as needed; 
  • Track hourly visitor traffic on “Hourly Tracker” and enter total number of visitors on “Daily Cash Register Reconciliation” form;
  • Monitor visitors who are in the gift shop to help prevent theft;
  • Replenish paper towels & toilet paper in restrooms, maintain & clean sink counters, mirrors and floor as needed throughout the day; 
  • Empty trash at end of the day from men and women's restrooms, workroom and reception area;
  • Inform property manager of needed items for restrooms;
  • Document any voided transactions or refunds on the Daily Cash Register Reconciliation form in notes section & include cash register receipt and details;
  • Document any vending machine refunds on Daily Cash Register Reconciliation;
  • Use the “Visitor’s Center Closing Checklist” – it is designed to prevent errors;
  • Secure building and engage alarm at the end of day;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Ability to multi-task: must be able to simultaneously work with numerous visitors, handling telephone calls and operating cash drawer for purchases;
  • Be punctual;
  • Basic computer skills;
  • Cash handling, operation of cash register and credit card machine;
  • Working knowledge of clerical procedures used in performing specialized office duties;
  • Working knowledge of specialized forms and procedures used in the assigned work;
  • Working knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and arithmetic;
  • Basic knowledge of agency program terminology and special regulations;
  • Basic knowledge of the policies, programs and activities of the office and the ability to apply these to pertinent situations;
  • Acts as a liaison between administration and office in retrieving information and performing limited research;
  • Ability to prepare and write correspondence and reports of technical or specialized nature; 
  • Ability to work with the public.
     

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
