Salary: The salary for this position starts at $68,770.00 per year.

 

Location: The location of this position is INDOT's Central Office, Indianapolis.

 

Role Overview:

  • The Traffic Safety Engineer is responsible for managing traffic safety data programs and processes to directly support the mission of the Department, statewide, and corridor-level analysis of strategic assessments and directs reporting of existing traffic safety conditions. You will also be responsible for the evaluation of crash deterrence and mitigation programs, coordination of new data programs and methodologies into safety decision-making frameworks, and managing the implementation of technological innovation in traffic safety. To be successful in this role you will be a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Indiana or possess an Engineer in Training Certification working towards becoming a licensed PE.

 

About the Job:

The Highway Engineer performs senior level engineering and supervisory work for the Indiana Department ofTransportation. Work is performed independently with occasional direction by a department supervisor.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Directs practices for overseeing the construction of highway road and bridge projects;
  • Directs methods for developing and administering major field traffic operations, such as: complicatedinterchanges or intersection layouts, addition of auxiliary lanes and access roads, signage, lighting andtraffic signals;
  • Directs, supervises and reviews revised or newly adopted specifications and directs policies to keep current;
  • Provides senior level engineering expertise to resolve problems and provide effective and timely services;
  • Conducts senior level engineering work in the engineering services and support fields, research, and special studies;

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Knowledge and skill typically acquired through a baccalaureate degree plus comparable work experience,related academic training plus comparable work experience;
  • Must have certification as a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Indiana;
  • Broad knowledge of and ability to apply civil engineering theories, principles, methods and procedures tothe engineering specialty of the individual;
  • Broad knowledge of and ability to apply federal and state laws, rules, regulations and procedures governingindividuals filed of specialization;
  • Broad knowledge of the specification standards an special provisions associated with the individual’s field ofspecialization;
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and practices and departmentadministrative regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply computer aided design and to field of specialization;
  • Ability to use initiative and creativity when making technical and managerial recommendations anddecisions;
  • Ability to prepare and review complex design plans and reports relating to individual’s field of specialization;
  • Ability to organize, plan, formulate and carry out programs and policies;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
