About the Job

The Traffic Engineer's primary responsibility is to assist the District Traffic Engineer in the selection of appropriate traffic control devices, traffic control at intersections and improving safety and efficiency in the state highway system in response to public requests and for planning future infrastructure projects. Manages and leads a team of traffic investigators in the collection of traffic data and the performance of traffic studies. 

A Day in the Life

•    Identifies safety and mobility concerns through traffic investigations. 
•    Supervise and lead a team of traffic investigators in the performance of their duties in traffic data collection and analysis.
•    Review the data & analysis provided by the traffic investigators for traffic investigations and make recommendations for changes to traffic control devices, intersection traffic control, speed limits, highway signs and markings.
•    With investigators assistance establishes sketches for changes to traffic control devices, signs and markings and provides responses to customer service.
•    Conducts field inspections of highways and intersections to determine traffic control needs. 
•    Performs complex traffic analysis utilizing traffic analysis software for operations and safety analysis.

What You'll Need For Success

  • Civil Engineer with Bachelor of Science Degree or related field is required;
  • Licensed as Professional Engineer in state of Indiana is required;
  • Must possess valid Indiana Driver’s License;
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of civil engineering principles, techniques, procedures, criteria, plans and specifications and related data; define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid engineering/technical conclusions; use statistical analysis; cooperate with coworkers on group projects; handle routine and sensitive contacts with government officials, consultants, contractors and general public
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Organized and able to manage and execute multiple projects

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
