Salary: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

Location: This position is located in INDOT's Central Office, Indianapolis Land & Aerial Survey.

 

Role Overview: As the Field Survey Technician, you will provide support functions for office and field operations of the survey and aerial sections. Support function for field operations includes assisting in field survey data acquisition and providing required data and information necessary to efficiently and effectively complete assigned project tasks on time, under budget, while meeting or exceeding established standards. Support functions for office operations include assisting in administering: the benchmark network database; InCORS Network; in addition to providing necessary administrative tasks to maintain the daily operation of the office.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Act as a lead worker over survey crews, providing work direction and training over the survey crew engaged in obtaining survey data for construction projects and in the operation, care, and maintenance of surveying instruments. 
  • Instruct, advise and train lower-level survey technicians in safety practices, survey procedures and operations (e.g., care and maintenance of survey equipment (global positioning satellites, digital level, and total station). 
  • Make drawings and sketches of field survey details from field data or office calculations. 
  • Operate survey equipment (e.g., electronic data collectors, total stations, GPS equipment, robotic total stations). 
  • Operate a state survey van to courthouses to research land deeds and to transport equipment (e.g., automatic level, GPS equipment, total station, magnetic locators, and robotic total stations) to job sites. 
  • Research and compile information from state, county, and city records to complete field surveys. 
  • Maintain records, land deeds, titles, and prepare notes to present a clear view of the project. Perform mathematical computations and prepare time sheets and car mileage sheets. 
  • Contact supervisors, utilities, planners, and property owners concerning survey work. 
  • Set up traffic control. 
  • Provide information and guidance in safety matters and practices.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Associates Degree in the Survey Technology or related field or 2 years’ experience in the survey field. 
  • Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.  
  • Surveyor Intern Certification preferred. 
  • Considerable knowledge in the operation of surveying instruments. 
  • Ability to use computer software and programs including SPMS, LRS, MIP, Chronolog, PeopleSoft, Outlook, Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD), Inroads, and Microsoft Office. 
  • Ability to read, copy and record figures, and gather, collate, and classify data. 
  • Ability to demonstrate physical agility. 
  • Ability to occasionally move 50 pounds. 
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, and volume, and the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.  

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
