Role Overview:

As the Roadway Drainage Engineer, you will be responsible for the analysis and consultation of transportation water resources (drainage, hydraulics) for the 6 INDOT districts. You will provide guidance on the design and maintenance of projects as well as specifications and policies that must be used. You will work collaboratively within your department and other INDOT departments, districts, state agencies, and the public to prepare correspondence for concerning hydraulic matters. Additionally, you will perform the basic survey for design work, write reports, and utilize hydraulic software programs to complete the functions of this role. A professional engineering license is not required for this position. If you do not currently have your professional engineering license you will be hired at a lower classification and will then be eligible for promotional increases upon achieving milestones including passing the EIT exam, years of experience, and obtaining your professional engineering license.  

 

Salary Statement: 

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $75,010.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • •    Reviews consultant plans and calculations for conformance with the Department's design criteria, policies, and specifications;
    •    Provides technical expertise, analysis and recommendations to other INDOT divisions and districts for hydrologic and hydraulic problems;
    •    Analyzes and prepares correspondence for supervisor concerning hydraulic matters received from consultants, outside agencies, Federal Highway Administration, other INDOT departments and districts, and the general public;
    •    Performs engineering calculations (i.e. open channel follow and culvert small structure analysis, hydrology, etc.) and computer analysis using specialized hydraulic software programs (i.e. HY-8, InRoads Storm & Sanitary/StormCAD, HEC-RAS, WIN-TR-20, etc); 
    •    Writes reports and correspondence documenting engineering decisions and recommendations;  
    •    Coordinates with the Office of Environmental Services Ecological/Permits Section the submittal of the necessary hydraulic models required for Department of Natural Resources (DNR) permits;
    •    Performs basic survey for design work;
    •    Performs related duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • •    Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana; 
    •    Unlicensed engineers will be considered at a lower classification;
    •    Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited school;
    •    Must have valid Indiana driver’s license;
    •    Knowledge of and ability to apply engineering principles, methods and procedures to all types of hydrologic and hydraulic designs and analysis;
    •    Knowledge of State and Federal rules, regulations and procedures governing hydrologic and hydraulic design;
    •    Knowledge of the design principles and practices applicable to bridge structures, drainage structures and open ditches;
    •    Knowledge of available hydrologic and hydraulic computer programs;
    •    Ability to read, interpret and analyze civil engineering plans, structural details, maps and specifications;
    •    Ability to effectively communicate and work in a cooperative manner with INDOT employees, Federal Highway, Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), consultants, the public, and other outside agencies;
    •    Ability to communicate both orally and in writing, and to follow oral and written instructions;
    •    Basic computer skills and the ability to become proficient in new programs and databases;
    •    Ability to perform basic calculations;
    •    Ability to write technical reports;
    •    Ability to identify problems; determine accuracy and relevance of information; use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
