This road engineering position develops and produces plans, specifications, and engineering estimates for various in-house road and/or bridge projects in a timely manner. The selected individual will be expected to effectively and efficiently design and manage multiple projects in different phases at any given time. The projects will vary in size, scope, schedule, and cost. In addition, it must be ensured that all state and federal regulations are being met.

About the Job:

The Highway Engineer performs senior level engineering and supervisory work for the Indiana Department of Transportation. Work is performed independently with occasional direction by a department supervisor.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Directs practices for overseeing the construction of highway road and bridge projects;
  • Provides direction in reviewing and interpreting plans, specifications and construction methods with contractors;
  • Prepares unique, unusual or complicated design plans or reviews similar plans designed by consultants for bridges, roads and related traffic projects;
  • Directs methods for developing and administering major field traffic operations, such as: complicated interchanges or intersection layouts, addition of auxiliary lanes and access roads, signage, lighting and traffic signals;
  • Trains, assigns and reviews the work of subordinates on the proper review and inspection of bridges, to provide normal maintenance, cost-effective repair work or major rehabilitation;
  • Directs, supervises and reviews revised or newly adopted specifications and directs policies to keep field testing functions current;
  • Provides senior level engineering expertise to field maintenance functions to resolve complicated maintenance problems and provide effective and timely maintenance services;
  • Conducts senior level engineering work in the engineering services and support fields, research, geotechnical engineering, land surveying and special studies;

What We're Looking For:

  • Knowledge and skill typically acquired through a baccalaureate degree plus comparable work experience, related academic training plus comparable work experience;
  • Must have certification as a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Indiana;
  • Broad knowledge of and ability to apply civil engineering theories, principles, methods and procedures to the engineering specialty of the individual;
  • Broad knowledge of and ability to apply federal and state laws, rules, regulations and procedures governing individuals filed of specialization;
  • Broad knowledge of the specification standards an special provisions associated with the individual’s field of specialization;
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply management  principles and practices and department administrative regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply computer aided design and drafting functions to field of specialization;
  •  Ability to use initiative and creativity when making technical and managerial recommendations and decisions;
  • Ability to prepare and review complex design plans and reports relating to individual’s field of specialization;
  • Ability to organize, plan, formulate and carry out programs and policies;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
